(MarketWatch) -- United Airlines is applying to fly a daily non-stop service between Guangzhou and San Francisco, according to a Xinhua Financial Network report that cited state media.

The report indicated that United (UAUA) could become the first U.S. carrier flying to south China, and that the airline would fly Boeing 747 aircraft on the route.

Only China Southern Airlines flies between Guangdong province and the United States, with five weekly flights from Guangzhou, the city formerly known as Canton, to Los Angeles, according to the report.
