Below are the top 60 domestic (lower 48 states) for O&D traffic from PHL. Colums are: other city to/from, Passengers per day, avg. one-way fare, carrier with the largest market share, market share and one-way fare charged by the carrier

Observations:

1. 6 of the top 9 destinations now have SW nonstop competition on their routes. If you include PVD and MHT as secondary airports of Boston than it would be 7 out of 9. Ditto SJC and OAK as secondary airports to San Francisco (only a Sat. nonstop for the moment)

2. PHL, while the 4th largest metropolitan area ranks 22nd as far as O&D passengers.

3. There are only 3 cities on the list that have avg. one-way fares of over $300 (PVD, RIC and MHT). Two of them now have direct SW non-stop competition.

4. 38 of the 60 cities listed are cities that are flown to by SW.

5. PVD and MHT are very low on the list shown below. Howver they both have tremendous traffic to BWI (1,818 and 1,644 daily passengers). Both of those routes are in the top 100 domestic routes flown in the U.S. (70th and 78th). So it takes little imagination that both of those cities' passenger traffic from PHL will skyrocket when fares go from $300 one-way to as little as $24 one-way.

6. Herb Kelleher dimishes the impact of SW's 28 daily flights to PHL compared to U's 400. However, those 28 flights bring 7,672 new seats to the PHL market each day. Considering that PHL only has 30,000 O&D daily passengers the impact of SW is going to have will be enormous.

7. U is the market leader on only 37 of those 60 routes. It would appear that PHL is not as strong a hub for U as other major's hubs.

If places like BNA, RDU, BWI, etc are any kind of guide, this won't hold true for very long.

Hmm, so many cities where US could fly 2-3 flights/day (assuming connecting traffic). Begs the question why US isn't with the CWA agreements allowing new cities to be opened with contract employees (or so I think). Heck, contract with UA, similar to how AC has UA handle some of its flights, to ground service the flights on a trial basis.

I think Clue's point was that due to the "Southwest Effect", BWI and other cities have seen a sizable increase in O&D traffic after WN comes to town.

Interesting MEM is on the list a #34 and U does not fly direct to there but many of the other cities below it they do.

Chicago #3 on the list with UA as the dominant carrier but only 35% market share

U doesnt even fly to 11 of the cities shown. So out of the 49 remaining it is number 1 in 37 of them. I know when head to head against most other hubs we are not dominant either. ATL-DL IAH-CO MSP-NW, etc you would think that in at least 1 of these head to head hub PHL markets we would be the leader.
