Tennessee family home burns while firefighters watch

A Tennessee couple helplessly watched their home burn to the ground, along with all of their possessions, because they did not pay a $75 annual fee to the local fire department.

South Fulton Mayor David Crocker defended the fire department, saying that if firefighters responded to non-subscribers, no one would have an incentive to pay the fee. Residents in the city of South Fulton receive the service automatically, but it is not extended to those living in the greater county-wide area.

So, fire fighters show up within feet of the home and watch it burn because they didn't pay a $75 annual fee.

Fee for services. How much of county, state and federals taxes did these people pay that subsidize fire departments.
Pure Capitalism does not work!

Part of me feels sorry but part of me says that they knew tbe risks and chisel not to pay. I assume they have home insurance and I am some what surprised that the insurance companies do not roll tbe $75 into the premium.

The only way the $75.works is if everyone pays. If people realize that they only have to pay if they have a fire then the post is not spread out evenly. It kind of sucks that they lost their home but things what happens when you gamble. House wins in most cases.

So tell me why we the indigent and/or illegals deserve free healthcare.

It's pretty much the same concept -- if you're not paying into the system, you shouldn't receive the benefits or service.

Your compassion is underwhelming...

Compassion for people who chose not pony up $75 bones a year for piece of mind? That's what I call a "teachable moment".

Life. It sure is a beech ain't it?

How do you know they choose not to?
You do know that there are a class of people that $75 is a lot of money.

Thank you Ms Trump.

So is replacing a home that burned down because you were too cheap to subscribe to the local fire protection district...

Sometimes the consequences of a bad decision suck.

I don't know. And I don't care.

That fee that they chose not to pay is considered a tax. I have a hard time getting choked up over people who don't pay their taxes and bad things happen. If your are so choked up over it then why don't you pay for everyone who demands services from their community, but chooses not to.

Like OWS?

Like OWS?

Basically yes. Should we feel sorry for those people who get in car wrecks and chose not to get insurance? Oh the horrors are endless.

Why is it societies problem to protect themselves from themselves?

How many of you have sent money to Obion county since you read this to make sure this doesn’t happen again? No one? Didn’t think so.

I have a question. How many of you ever witnessed a massive effort orchestrated by progressives that required bravery, manpower, sacrifice, intelligence and giving?

Ya. Me neither.

Volunteer firefighters are notoriously conservative. So are the armed services.

You'd think at some point though, the fire dept could be held somewhat liable. Wonder if they'd stand around and listen to someone inside screaming while burning to death?
