SWA and what it means At US

I don't want to come across as mean spirited on this...so I will attempt to delicately say what I mean.

The fact that this incident is happening to WN is sort of sweet justice in a way. They have been attempting to beat the brains out of every carrier for decades.
Fine.
Part of that is attempting to make it nearly impossible for the majors to raise fares to keep up with fuel $ etc...thus many of the fare increases have failed this year because WN won't go along. This is just choking off competitors by another method.
I understand and appreciate competition in business. What I don't is the holier than thou way WN does it.

So, I hate to say it but this A/C fatigue issue and the major $$$ involved kinda serves em' right. If you fly an a/c mercilesly for 5-6-7 legs a day, every day and all the stress of pressurization that involves and through that force the rest of the industry more and more into that abyss...things can happen. Did they think it would'nt?? Me thinks they have gotten a wee-bit cocky.

Here they come-the vultures that appeared the last time that cracks were found in WNs fuselage! At the time, karma proved that airlines have the same problems.US had a piece of wing dislodged and there was an issue with landing gear! On 2/2/2010,USA Today had a story on the front page titled-Since 2003, 65,000 US flights with maintenance problems have taken off anyway!

So let the airline without sin cast the first stone!!! You all live in glass houses!

That is just my two-cents...now pile away!

That's a silver lining, so to speak.

A talk show host this after noon came up with another silver lining.. the incident enables USAir to add additional revenue through a new fee.. the intact plane fee.

Some of the later media reports say it had ~39,000 cycles. That means averaging a little over 7/day every day since it was new. Obviously it would have had some "time off" for heavier maintenance/repair of maintence problems along the way, which would up the cycles/day for the days it flew.

Somebody may remember better than I. Didn't PI/US have one of the highest time 737-200's in existence - something like 50,000+ cycles?

Jim
I think that was N9049U, it had some miles on it when PI got it from UA. I recall some of the older 737-200's having a fair amount of "extra" rivets on them.

that's one of the most vindictive silly comments I have read on this board.

serves em right...

give me a break..

PI had some of the oldest 737-200s around, we had several that had rear galley stairs, I believe A/C 213US is the one Boeing got back and is now a movie theater in the Museum of Flight.

213US

And on another note, someone in PIT changed the name on the 737-300 one time to say No Brain, instead of No Brainer, on one of the Silver Bullets.

Even though our 300's are long in the tooth. Let's not forget there's even older planes out there flying domestically. How bout Delta's DC-9's from Northwest. Those things on average are 40 years old right? And I don't remember ever hearing about any of those failing for stress cracks.

Maybe bacause they were built by McDonald Douglas. :D

I'm not sure if the DC-9s DL is flying are quite that old, but they did have the highest time aircraft in the world which was a DC-9 in the 90s. That broke the record of a North Central DC-3 in the 60s.

It's interesting how the Douglas / McDonnell Douglas commercial aircraft seem to keep on earning a living; DC-3, DC-6, DC-8.

It's a good thing the aft part of the fuselage is gone. People would still be drawing a Rosie Robot face on the airstairs.

You are obviously new here. This is just history repeating itself. I seen it immediately following the Great Duct Tape Debate Of '08! Following that LUV was fined by the FAA because of cracks in the fuselage of a number of planes. The US vultures came out in droves. The most striking comment I remember went something like-What do you think of America's Sweetheart now? Yes they took all their shots, but were shocked to findthat people still stuck by WN!

A couple weeks after that a piece of US aircraft, perhaps from the wing, dislodged during a landing in Philly. I think there was also an issue with the landing gear on another aircraft. Either way karma struck back!
