Corporate Headquarters is monitored day and night by a group of security guards, but Halloween was no ordinary night for Norm Robertson. At 5:22 p.m. on Halloween night, Norm noticed something more "trick" than "treat."
During a routine walk around the building, he saw a fire in the loadingdock. Assessing the situation, Norm pulled two flaming boxes off a palate of paper and debris, immediately lessening the possibility of a more dangerous fire.
According to a surveillance video, an unknown man attempted to set three fires in the loading dock then break into the back hallway of CHQ, which was locked. Two fires resulted and Norm and EVP and CIO Joe Beery each grabbed a fire extinguisher while they waited for the Fire Department to arrive. They used two full fire extinguishers but were not able to quell the flames.
John Schwartzkopf, manager of corporate security said, Norm's timing could not have been better. This could have been a serious event with tremendous damage, but thanks to Norm, we had no structural damage. John also noted that because of the new security cameras, US Airways was able to provide police with several pictures of the man.
Norm said, "I wasn't sure how serious it was until I saw the palates. So I pushed the boxes on fire to the ground and tried to put them out. Then I turned around and the dumpster was on fire! We're lucky it wasn't as bad as it could have been."
