SAFETY OVERSIGHT

Anybody notice this is all happening in an election year? Anybody notice the FAA is woefully short on money in an election year? Anybody notice that Oberstar resides in the home state of Northwest? Does anybody notice that when it comes to the airline industry any news is BIG news? I'm not saying it didn't happen, but when your favorite airline is the so called "King of the Hill", everyone is gunning for you, hoping you'll slip up. Does anybody think stuff like this doesn't happen more often than the flying public knows at all the other airlines. Southwest will deal with it, fix the problem, pay the fine, whatever it ends up to be, and the FAA will move on to their next target of opportunity. Next subject.....

Sure cowboy. It was the second mechanic from the grassy knoll that did the crime. No this is not about SWA being the king of the hill. They are far from being kings of much. Clowns perhaps, but not kings.

I am sure you want this to go away quickly. I am just glad you did not hurt anyone as a result of these deliberate (yes that is what the FAA is calling it) acts. From what I have heard this may be a tip of the iceberg issue. Some more issues involving flight operations coming soon. Stay tuned this may require popcorn and for me to take time off from some projects to enjoy.

I bet you must take the FAA approach to tombstone regulation. I know how SW can save even more money on maintenace, they can contract all of there aircraft checks out to vendors and third party outfits to pencil whip, not just their heavy checks. This is not just an oversight on SW part but a deep rooted problem with a broke system that makes Aeroflot a first class operation. Maintenace has been the red headed step child and the first thing to be cut from airlines ever since 9-11.
The thing is that these ADs were instituted long before 9-11. It seems to me that WN and their buddy at the FAA purposely did not comply. The only reason they self disclosed is because of the 2 whistle blowers that turned them in. This is not a case of a mistake that was caught a few days later and disclosed. This went on for years! WN is totally responsible for this act and should get what they deserve!!! The End

magsau,

Why must you call boeingdriver213 a clown? You seem to insinuate that it was the SW AMT that is at fault? Did the SW AMT create the maintenance program? No, the SW AMT does what any skilled AMT does... provide safe, airworthy aircraft.

Perhaps you would like to call the Alaska AMTs "clowns" also for their MD-80 accident years ago? Or the AA AMTs even further back in time for the DC-10 accidents? If you do, make sure you remain behind your alias. Your quote of, "to take time off from some projects to enjoy.", are the words of a COWARD!

You seem to forget that all professional AMTs possess knowledge, skill & integrity. Your assumption that SW AMTs are other than that indicates that the sky in your world is dark brown. I would like to suggest that you fart real hard in order for your head to see the real world and that lessons are to be learned from adversity.

Ken, save it.

That guy does not even warrant a response from a respected person like you.

My major concern is not really directed at Southwest, but rather the FAA. The system they use to approve and monitor carriers allows the FAA's regional offices great leeway in how carriers are approved and monitored. The most immediate example is the way that Southwest is and was allowed to do their preflight announcements much differently then other airlines. No other airline, to my knowledge, was allowed to make that announcement humerous or anything other then a rote recitation of whatever was contained in that airline's flight attendant's manual.

I am not sure of your experience, yet I assure you that PA's are changed all the time! They need to have the safety info at all times, but can be humerous at the same time. I recently nonreved and the "preflight" as well as others were sang with a unique Christmas theme. This was on Delta. I have heard numerous other "non standard" PA's on AA and CO. I have been a F/A for WN for 18 years and I travel on other airlines quite often.

Once again, If the info is in the PA, delivery can be unique!!!

The key word here is........."Complicit"
Like in...."WN was COMPLICIT in the sum total" !

I'm no great fan of WN, and I admit it. I DON'T bash them like I use to, ...AND..I actually buy tickets to Fly on them.

DO I think WN was part of a "pre-planned" COVER UP ?..........NO
DO I think this has More to do with the FAA ?...........................YES
DO I think WN took advantage of an Unexpected oppertunity that "came their way ?...........YES
DO I think WN "covered their A$$" 100% on this ?...................NO

You Don't have to be a Diabolical Demon, to become Complicit.

WN took a "shot", they took a "shot" at something that probably had a 99.9% chance of being OK.

In the end, the dealer turned over, "the ONLY card in the deck" that could hurt them.

It's Not complicated. It IS what it IS !

Thats why they call it Gambling !!

Other differences appear on other levels and I don't blame Southwest for any of this, but rather the FAA's methodology in allowing significant variations based upon which regional office is responsible for that airline. In my opinion that practice is wrong and all airlines should be playing under both the same rules and the same interpretation of those rules.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You obviously never flew the "real" PSA in California prior to it's demise in the late 80's. WN took the idea from them. I don't believe there are any rules on the delivery method just so long as all the safety info is presented clearly.

By the way. WN is totally to blame. The FAR's are quite clear that the owner operator of the aircraft are wholly responsible for the airworthiness of it's acft. The fact the FAA allowed it to put off the inspections is another issue. The End

In this case the "king" should ensure they comply with AD's and not perpetuate a maintenance program that uses such deliberate tactics to usurp the rules. I would hope the "king" would do more to keep his backside covered than something as stupid as this.

Maybe you guys should have bought the controllers more kegs of beer or sent more milk and cookies to the FAA.
