AirTran Would Vie for Airport Gates Shed by a Merged US Air-Delta

AirTran Holdings Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Joe Leonard said he is interested in acquiring airport gates sold by US Airways Group Inc. or Delta Air Lines Inc. if those carriers merge, the latest sign that rival airlines are eyeing the hostile takeover battle as a chance to grab long-coveted assets.

Mr. Leonard's comments in an interview came as executives of US Airways and Delta met in New York with major Delta creditors who could determine whether the $8.5 billion takeover bid succeeds. The meeting in midtown Manhattan lasted several hours, with senior US ...

As I discussed in my insightful post "Delta Breakup Possible," [ http://www.usaviation.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=32092 ] Delta could quickly lose control of the bankruptcy process as other players enter the picture. Both Southwest and Airtran have now gone public, with others soon to follow. I have sources for this but they will, of course, have to remain secret.

Here is a useful tool for gauging the momentum of the Delta breakup train. The larger WorldTravelers' fonts become, the greater the momentum.
