Can anyone help me with this puzzle? This was the last trip I took before I started a spreadsheet. I remember the outbound flights but not the return.

I took off from LGA in the mid-afternoon on the first Friday in April 2003. I know that I landed in GSO on a Dornier 328 turboprop.

US used to fly DC-9's LGA-GSO but those were gone by 2003.

I don't think I flew this non-stop. I probably connected in DCA or PIT. I'm pretty sure it wasn't CLT or PHL.

Anyone know what the schedule was in early April 2003? (other than "better" 🙂 )

If nobody else has anything, go to the BTS webside and download the on-time database for April 2003. You won't need to download every field - day of month, carrier, flight number, departure airport, arrival airport, crs departure time, and crs arrival time should be the minimum you'll need. Unfortunately, this database doesn't have equipment type.

BTS On-Time Database

Then sort it by departure and arrival airport and pick out your flights.

I don't have a timetable, but I would bet it was through PIT. I know that US was running 328s from PIT to GSP, CAE, and I think CHS. So it's likely they were running them to GSO too.

IIRC, they were flown to TRI also, but I don't know if it was as late as 2003.

Which express operator(s) flew the 328 for US?

Holy cow, I just remembered something unique about this flight... the flight attendant made a no-pee announcement but neglected to make the pee-now-allowed announcement. So it must have been DCA! Wow, a silver lining to the 30 minute no-pee rule that thankfully has gone by the wayside! 🙂

There were 5 LGA-GSO non-stops. Aircraft types not available.

I used to have to decipher flight number ranges a lot in my job for the purpose of classifying DOT complaints to the right Express carrier, so I may be able to shed some light on this.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that the middle two DCA-GSO flights (3054 and 3117) were Piedmont, and therefore DH8. So you can eliminate those. I flew them all the time, to boot, especially 3117.

And I can tell you that BWI-GSO flights were not wholly-owned (I believe those were those God-awful J41s operated by TransStates). You can eliminate those, too.

LGA-GSO was operated by TransStates' Jet operation using ERJ. That jives with what I recall their flight number range to be, too - upper 4k.

I don't think there was ever a time that a wholly-owned had flights in the 5k range. I seem to recall the 5k numbered PIT-GSO flights being operated by Chautauqua.

IIRC, EN flights were 3000-3199 and JS were 3200-??, or something close to that. I also remember there being a mixture of DH8 and D38 on DCA-GSO for a while (I recall this because I hated the maintenance-delay/cancellation-prone D38).

All of this to say, through process of elimination, I'd wager that US3243 and US3372 DCA-GSO were operated by JS D38s.

Why the hell that is still in my brain 5 years later, and a year after leaving the company, is beyond me. I need more therapy, apparently.

This board is therapy.

I have access to the April 2003 OAG, so here goes:

1) the only D38 flights into GSO were from DCA, so you must have connected there.
2) the only 2 D38 from DCA to GSO were flights 4050, 11:50a - 1:00p and 4055, 8:50p - 9:59p
3) shuttle service from LGA-DCA 319's. flight 2669, 10:00a - 11:06a seems logical for the first connecting option and flight 2687, 7:00p - 8:08p would fit for the second.

LGA-DCA, #2669, 10:00a - 11:06a, 319
DCA-GSO, #4050, 11:50a - 1:00p, D38

OR

LGA-DCA, #2687, 7:00p - 8:08p, 319
DCA-GSO, #4055, 8:50p - 9:59p, D38

Thanks! The sun was up when I arrived, so it must have been flight 4050.

I always liked flying on the D38. It seems quite powerful for a turboprop. I didn't like the jet version (FRJ) -- too loud. I wasn't aware the Dorniers were maintenance hogs.
