Psa -700 Program Cancelled?

(Apr. 30) The Master Executive Council (MEC) Thursday night in a Special Meeting rejected a surprise proposal from the Company that would have staffed the CRJ-700 program with 100% APL pilots.

The MEC Chairman on Wednesday received a written proposal from PSA Airlines which included language that would staff the 70-seat aircraft with Jets-for-Jobs pilots exclusively. The Company also told the Association that it would cancel the CRJ-700 program unless its terms were met by Saturday, May 1.

The proposal came as a surprise to some MEC members because the Association was not involved in active negotiations.

The MEC, after discussion, voted 7-0 to support a motion by Irvin/Nagy that rejected the Company proposal and deadline. The Negotiating Committee was scheduled to notify the Company early this morning.

All -700 training has been cancelled
Does anyone know where this text came from? Is it from the PSA VARS or was it a letter from the PSA MEC? The VARS message from 4/30 is not worded the same and I was curious as to the source of this information.

As of about Noon on Wed May 5th all 3 CRJ-700's are parked in DAY indefinatly. Last rev flight with the CR7 was US2208/5 MAY SRQ-CLT-DAY.

So, no CRJ-700's flying for PSA, huh?

Interesting......

Does anyone know if Virgin is even still in the picture to possibly pick up PSA or the rest of the Express operation? I know that Mesa is still a possibility, but with Jon Ornstein's biggest cheerleader and dupe headed to the permanent locker room, I'm thinking that he has a bit less bargaining power with Lakefield calling the shots.

I dunno. Maybe Richard Branson might come up with a good reason to fly smaller aircraft and serve smaller markets and make some extra cash on the side.

Of course, there is more to an airline than just aircraft.

If the 700's are parked until a solution can be reached it. It seems that arrogance has once again won. ALPA has to be squirming in there seats as the RJ defense fund and the PFR lawsuits continue to get closer to the courtroom. Albeit still years away. Hope the guys at PSA stick to there guns and hold the 700's hostage from always arrogant mainline pilot group. J4J was what it was but they always want more.

Could there be a connection between the apparent parking of the CRJ-700's and the rumor that was floating among the crowd when the Dash-8-400 was in SBY that Bombarbier has offered US Airways a sweetheart deal for Q-400's in exchange for CRJ-700's?

That is a very, very interesting observation.

Maybe US returns the CRJ-700s and enters into an agreement to transfer the CRJ-700 contracts to Q400 contracts. There is certainly a market for CRJ-700s, so the loss would not be big at all.

So, all large RJ flying goes to MidAtlantic and instead, the PSA pilots get the Q400s instead.

Umm...wouldn't it make more sense to have Piedmont pilots for a DeHavilland aircraft than PSA pilots?

That aircraft looks like one hell of a scary ride. Being a veteran rider of the Dash-8 and enjoying every eerie sound that the engine and fuselage can produce, I think the airline would have to pay the passenger to fly it.

It's not as fast as the ERJ or CRJ, either.

1) Actually, I've heard that it is very quiet - almost as quiet as a standard jet.

2) On the routes where the Q would fly, the difference between the Q and a ERJ would be zero as much of the flying would be all done under the control of the ATC and you're not going to be doing much cruising between CLT and GSO.

Problem is no matter if it seats 500 and travels at Mach 9, people still won't want to fly on it because it's a Ooooo...scaaaaary turboprop. IMHO, it'd be a mistake to get 'em.

Yup, that is the overarching concern.

I think somebody needs to fly out to PDX or SEA, ride a few Horizon Air flights and do some surveys on the perceptions of those passengers.

I do agree though, many folks see propellors and immediately think DC-3 or B-17.

BTW, here's AS's DH4 flight schedule. They've got about 68 daily flights out of SEA/PDX using these planes. So, they must have about 20 or 30 of 'em.

Anyhow, did some comparisons. The PDX-SEA flights run about 52 minutes in length. In comparison a CRJ-700 flight from PDX to SEA is 49 minutes - essentially negligible.

Hell, you could fly a F-18 at 1.6M and still couldn't better that block by much. It's just not that far.
