Pit Schedule - Unofficial

what planet are you on? US Airways mistreatment of its passengers will serve as thier downfall. I don't want to see anybody lose thier jobs, but how can US compete with WN and stay out of bankruptcy?

Connections, Connections, Connections..... Yes the people in Pit are use to Non-Stop flights, but expect MANY to flee USAirways and connect in PHL in the short term.

Oh you are SO WRONG! I no longer have the direct flights out of PIT that I used to. 98% of my travel now requires a connection thru PHL. I purposely will find ways of connecting thru CLT because of this.I miss my direct flights but have learned to live with it.

I'm a US1 and your average nonfrequent flyer is going to look at cost and time and plane size too. Right now if I want to fly to DFW on US I get the EMB170. No thanks. I'll fly in coach on a 737 to LUV thank you.

But aren't you always saying on these boards, give them what they want? Guess what?! PIT customers are tried of being raped by high fares. So will Ma & Pa Burgher fly LUV? You bet.

I too find the lack of PIT-BWI surprising... But LUV does focus on local pax, not O&D... So they probably want to go after the biggest O&D markets first... and PHL is probably a bigger market than BWI, and still can offer similar connections... That would be my guess anyway.

Does this force the two concourse operation at PHL... Or can LUV squeeze 45 PHL flights on its 4 Concourse E gates? There was previously some discussion of LUV taking gates D2 and D4 at PHL. Is that now the case with the added PHL flights... (I thought it was at 41 with the last expansion, +4 PIT flights get you to 45)

I think Southwest will actually be up to 42 daily flights at PHL before adding PIT-PHL; PHL-MDW goes to five daily round-trips (from four) in a bit over two weeks. They did take gates D2 and D4 at PHL; they don't use them as much since obviously these gates would make connections to flights at the E Concourse cumbersome. But with careful scheduling it's possible for Southwest to turn a gate over about 12 times a day.

I read on airwhiners.net that Southwest is holding off growing BWI until they can get proper staffing there -- they are very picky about the folks they hire. I was really quite surprised to see BWI left out of the first wave, especially given the strength of the PIT-WAS market even at US Airways' inflated fares.

For some reason I just dont' think that there is the amount of traffic between PIT and PHL that everyone seem to think. PIT has always had a ton of flights in and out of the airport when US hubbed it. PHL has a very large O/D traffic base. The two are like night and day at this time in airline history. US was doing about 20% O/D traffic before US cutbacks. There was traffic between PIT and PHL for other destinations beyond both hubs. PIT is no longer classifed a HUB. I'm not saying that when WN enters a market it dosen't stimulate traffic but there are only so many people that can, will and do fly between the two cities. A friend that flies through PHL all the time on YX to MKE says that he dosen't see to many business type people sitting in the boarding gates. As bad as US has gotten they still provide TWO very important things that WN dosen't offer. Seat assignments and a premium frequent flyer program that allows elite frequent flyers to reserever seats in asile or window seats. Why would you worry about the chance of getting stuck in a middle seat when you can reserve a seat and know it will be there when you board. I know no one out there like getting stuck in a middle seat. People will still continue to fly US and they will also fly WN. US will match fares and will offer mileage bonus. It will be right down to who is leaving at the right time. It seems that WN always seems to bring the finest in the traveling public out to fly, but I guess their money is just as green as everyones.

US is NOT going anywhere anytime soon, so it will be a long battle for SWA at PIT.

Perhaps, but who is better suited for a war of attrition?

As perviously noted, WN can do PIT-PHL 20 times a day if so inclined and not sweat it.

You keep thinking the folks in PIT wont flock to $29 dollar fares when US is offering a $500 dollar fare on the same route....

Pittsburgh Customers can take off to PHL or MDW for only $29 one-way (available for purchase now through May 26) with Southwest’s 14-day advance purchase fare, while the advance-purchase fare to MCO is only $79 one way.

Do what?

Just out of curiosity, what was the US "business type" fare PIT-PHL...you know, out in the morning, back in the afternoon? In other words, what was the unrestricted and fully refundable fare? The reason I ask is because the answer might indicate the reason that there was only 20% O&D traffic on the route.

As far as your last line about the quality of passengers....Dallas to Houston isn't the biggest leisure market in the world, but it still seems to warrant hourly (or better) flights every day. I invite you to visit DAL one day during the week and then tell us if your definition of "finest in the travelling public" is affected in the least bit.

PIT-PHL O & D ("local pax") 3Q03: 463
PIT-BWI " " " 68

PIT-Portland, maine see more local pax than BWI. BWI will be added in time, but not for a while. TPA, PHX, HOU, PVD/MHT (BOS area), BNA, RDU, LAX, FLL all see more traffic than BWI, even if you factor in the other 2 WASH area airports.

The $29 fare are only introductory fares on about 5% of the seats sold right now. US has already matched that and will probably continue to match those fares by SWA. What it all comes down to in the end is who offers a better product and a more convenient schedule out of PIT. SWA will only stimulate the market, which is what they historically do, but in turn could actually help US pull more traffic out of PIT in the long run, especially with lower fares and a more competitive cost structure of a LCC. After all, most of those business flights out of PIT that are doing so well were feuled by US's hub presence not local O/D traffic.

Duh! I meant LUV does focus on local pax, not connecting pax... But I'm sure you guys figured that out already...

As for USAir, the fat lady is warming up her vocal chords.

People are going to remember how USAir has screwed them financially over the years and they're going to vote with their wallets. See RDU and PHL as examples. Just lowering fares to WN's level won't save them. At $29 each way from PIT to PHL, US is going to bleed a sea of red ink.
