Pit Is Disappointing ?

Southwest fourth-busiest airline in Pittsburgh debut

Southwest Airlines was the fourth busiest in terms of passenger traffic in its first month at Pittsburgh International Airport, airport officials said Tuesday.

The Dallas-based low-cost carrier (NYSE:LUV), which began service from Pittsburgh on May 4 with 10 daily flights, had a total of 57,260 passengers, accounting for six percent of the traffic at Pittsburgh's primary airport, according to the May Scheduled Airlines Traffic Report issued by the Allegheny County Airport Authority.

US Airways, despite cuts in service and a 39.4 percent fall off from last May, was still far and away the busiest airline in Pittsburgh, with 570,168 riders.

Delta (65,228) and United (60,931) were second and third, the airport authority said.

"The numbers show that the public has demonstrated a strong response to Southwest Airlines," said Allegheny County Airport Authority executive director Kent George. "The public's strong response to low fares and more choices is vital to the continued growth of our regional air traffic."

Where in these numbers are they flocking to SWA TRAILWAYS?

It's the part that says in only it's first month, with no proven local history to go on, over 57,000 said "I'll take SWA." Watch those numbers for a few months and see what happens. It's just like opening a new restaurant. There's a lot of buzz at first then, after the reputation for outstanding service and a reliable product is built, the business will quietly go through the roof with little fanfare.

By the way, which is better: to be on a bus that's going forward profitably or one with flat tires and an empty gas tank and relying on the compassion of a bankruptcy judge to keep it from being sent to the junkyard? Make all the "Trailways", "Greyhound" or whatever jokes you want because we enjoy good humor here at SWA. We smile a lot ... especially on paydays!

Being the #4 carrier in PIT is nothing to boast about, there aren't that many mainline carriers there, isn't it going to a lot of commuters. And, isn't BWI losing traffic to PHL now for SWA? Sounds like they are eating their own lunch there. Same thing happened to US, got too many hubs too close together which will eventually start competition with yourself.

I'm sure y'all had the following response in California, then Florida, then BMI, then...

I think Whatnow? is just scared that, based on those numbers, WN will be #2 in PIT after the Phifth Philly Phlight comes online. Or maybe that WN coach class has more legroom, leather seats, better free food on long haul flights, reasonable fares, and no RJs flying 1000 miles in PIT.

What we at SWA have to remember is that the last thing we ever want to do is become a "real airline." We need to concentrate on being in the customer service business. We just happen to use airplanes to accomplish that mission. It's all too obvious that the airline business is filled with failure because they get wrapped up in the equipment side of the equation and neglect the folks that pay the bills. Airplanes don't generate revenue, customers do!

We have nothing to fear but ourselves. Stick to the tried-and-true business plan: as long as we give our absolute greatest effort to provide the absolute best service in the absolute most efficient manner we'll be just fine. Let the other carriers do what they will. There are plenty of passengers to go around.

SWA's mantra: "underpromise, overdeliver"

I have NEVER wanted and NEVER want to work for SWA. You are an insulting boob to think anyone at US is a SW Wannabee. And your US Scareways remark only shows how small you and probably your penis are.

You don't have to look much further from your own mirror to find the real LOSER!!

BK is just fine with me. I don't own this co. and as long as the paycheck clears, I could give a d###, Beaver!

?????????

I am so happy for you that you don't want to work at SWA. By not applying for a job there you'll be spared the embrassment of being thrown out of the interview for displaying such a "it's all about me" attitude!

It has been so long since USAirways management did anything to show that it valued its employees that callousness and selfishness are all that's left. I enter exhibit "firstamendment" as evidence. It is unfortunate that so many leaders fail to recognize the short-sightedness of considering workers as "production units" instead of "individuals."

SWA workers actually care about their company partly because they do own a large part of the company. Mostly, however, its simple pride in doing a job well. They're not all PollyAnnas, but having a bright future to look at and being led by honest and decent managers is a pleasant experience.

I wish every airline and airline employee well ... just not too well!

 WoW!! Sorry to see that employee assistance counseling was dropped at USAirways.

Your situation absolutely sucks, and negativity breeds more negativity. I believe I have the choice, EVERYDAY, regardless of what the outside situation is, of choosing how my day goes.

God Bless.

You are not the "BAD GUY", you just play one on the forum. :)
I apologize if you were offended by my pointing out the incompatibility of your "I don't give a damn about the company as long as my paycheck clears the bank" attitude with the Southwest Airlines hiring program. It was my observation, and, sorry, but that attitude is still showing!

I have a life, thank you.

Angry tirade noted. I must credit you for authoring an impressive tirade! If you can see fit to redirect that energy into a positive purpose for your company it might actually survive!

Yes, like every airline SWA WILL ride into the sunset in the future. It is a normal and expected business life cycle. The goal is to postpone that event as long as possible.

Calm down, FirstAmendment,

We are not the Dark empire overhere.

Several of us overhere have worked for other airlines. We know first hand what it's like to be laid off. So many of us over here have a vested intrest in making this company work, to prevent that from happing again. With that being said, I get paid every two weeks no matter if U, or any other airline is around. Wishing ill on WN as a whole is a futile gesture, we can't control what's going to happen in the future. Everything has a life span I am sure we have ours but I hope to ride to crest of the wave as long as I can doing the best I can to keep it going. Hell many people at the legacys have done the same thing.

I don't foresee any troubles ahead but I can tell you that this isn't the same company I started to work for 12 years go. We are a BIG airline now and our problems will be alot more like the legacys. The company is trying the best it can to manage growth but it's how we as employees handle it that will lead to continued success.

Humility, is a virtue here. Some posters have a different veiw on things don't take that as the whole though.

Enough said, Now get out there and take a walk!

I know this is beating a dead horse but I can't resist. This is the excerpt from todays Earnings statement:

"We initiated service to Pittsburgh on May 4th, with our Legendary low fares, and have been very pleased with the tremendous Customer response and demand for Southwest service. As a consequence, more flights are planned for Pittsburgh later this year."

Yes, you are beating a dead horse! SWA doing well?.....yeah that is a big suprise! YAWN....SWA does well wherever they go! Duh!
