I didn't see reference this in the last week or so. The article was written on 11/3 by Tom Belden, who has been an Inquirer travel writer for as long as I can remember - well before the internet and color newspapers were the norm. He's always been, in my opinion, fair and balanced.

Of note are the kudos to US' turnaround in operations and improved city relations.

These operational, physical plant and business-to-government relationship improvements are great. When I worked there, getting the company and the city to cooperate was like trying to get the Hatfields and the McCoys to sit down for a glass of lemonade on the porch.

Question, though:

Is Mayor Nutter doing something about the surliness of his citizens? I'm not just talking about the employees of US. There are some of those who must have had a surly vaccine or who must not be locals. But in PHL, this rough, nasty edge to people is everywhere, like they're proud of it, and it's contagious. In my experience, it's not the "City of Brotherly Love." It's the "City of Push and Shove."

I screwed the post up an case anyone didn't notice LOL. I was going to say...great analogy Piney. Their biotches if there your enemy and a friend you don't want to lose if their on your side. Just ask the Brits! If it weren't for their fighting nature we'd be speaking the King's english. Thank God for their personalities!

Also wanted to highlight a comment in the article where it talked about "cooperation" between US Airways and Airport and local government officials as being a key ingredient to the turn around. Who woulda thunk it 3 years ago that Philly would turn around. So many naysayers...where are ya now???

"Cooperation Breeds Success"

"Bless your heart" is Suthernese for F*** Y**.

You just have to speak the language.

My wife, an MSY native, says the sign of a good Southern woman is that she can tell you to F yourself and that you'll say "thanks."

I, too, like the WYSIWYG-ness of communicating with most Northeasterners. It took a bit of getting used to, though. And you're right, no person should ever talk down to another. That goes for customers and employees alike.

But there's a flaw to your defense, PB. PHL is a major connecting complex. Employees are not just dealing with Philadelphians and other Yankees. Tammy and Earl from BHM aren't going to cotton to the "attytoode." Nor are Nigel and Victoria from London, Francois and Genevieve from Paris or Rainbow and River from California.

Then route them through CLT, where at least they will be given the verbal equivalent of the middle finger salute with grace, charm and kind words!
