Just wondering here...

Since WN has reportedly done so well out of PHL, what would it take to get a crew base there? How many flights a day currently out of PHL? How many destinations served now?

I preface this by saying that SWA never ceases to surprise me with some of its announcements so I could be WAY off. Although I would love to see a crew base in PHL as it has long been rumored, I don't think it will happen just because another crew base is so close at BWI, less than 2 hours away. Also, the new LAS base is scheduled to open later this year so "new base" talk has dwindled since that announcement was made. I think we will move to a few satellite bases before PHL becomes a full-fledged crew base. I also think MCI, TPA and BNA are higher up on the crew base priority list. Just my opinion.

So what are the current WN bases and what are the base #'s in order from largest crew bases to smallest?

From largest to smallest...I think...I could be off a tad here, but to my knowledge:

MDW
BWI
PHX
OAK
MCO
HOU
DAL
LAS (opening Fall 2007 with approx. 400 flight attendants)

If I am off, anyone out there, please correct me. Thanks!

Just a quick note about the crew base in LAS. From what I understand the date of the crew base opening has been pushed back. Citing construction delays. They haven't even broke ground yet...

Oh, it'll open. We just will have to wait, a little longer, for the swanky, dedicated, crew building. :D

I had always heard that renting space in LAS was expensive, so......

What does a Crew Base Building consist of? Just offices, lounge area, daybeds, ?

FYI, yesterday SWA posted an article on its internal website asking for those ground personnel interested in laterally transferring to LAS to submit their applications. Those transferring will be required to report sometime in September.

Daybeds? Now THERE'S an idea!!

My mistake...it wasn't a posting looking for ground personnel in LAS...it was for SFO. My bad.

But I'm still intrigued by the daybed idea! lol

Well if they get the 4 additional gates later this year as promised and grow to over 100+ flights, which they are supposed to do, it might happen. Also, i'd bet the chances are even better if WN starts international services out of PHL, either themselves or in partnership with ATA as the CEO is saying they will. If WN starts international service, they'd have to do little at BWI because the connecting infrastructure is essentially already in place. However, they would need to strengthen PHL domestically (beyond the 100 daily flights), in order to provide adequate international feed.

WN would do Int'l service out of PHL, they'll be like US, go from one side of airport to the other end. PHL has to think about putting a skytrain in. BWI for International sounds more like it. PHL has to much to compete against than BWI has. BWI lacks European service except for London and Iceland.

I realize that ATA is a Major component to (possible) WN international flying, BUT WHY would they want to do it out of (Disfunctional) PHL, instead of BWI, WHICH WN..."RULES" ?

Could'nt they xfer a few ATA flts into BWI from PHL ??
