Pennsylvania Senators Vote Yes On Slots, which will help Pittsburgh keep its main tenant, US Airways

how will it help usairways when they pull a chunk of flts out by the end of september? and also what kind of carriers would be interested in pit? i didnt think there is much to do in PIT but i havent been there in years

And those slots will help US Air? Perhaps I just don't get it, but I fail to see how. That is a very big stretch in thinking, perhaps a bit psychotic.

"House leaders said they won't vote on it until they can consider a companion piece of legislation.

That bill would distribute the gambling revenue to school districts to reduce property taxes."

Somehow, that seems a better use of the gambling proceeds than revitalizing an airport. How much can throwing a couple hundred million $$$ at it help if US is downsizing and, as of now, no new airlines are expected to pick up the slack.

If the airport debt is lowered, so too should the landing fees and facility leases. This would reduce the company's operational cost and make it more attractive to increase the utilization of the 10 mainline and 10 express gates.

Lower costs could mean more flights, more profits, and more jobs.

I believe the Commonwealth acted way too slow and if they had reacted with more enthusiasm, there was reason to believe PIT could be like Cincinnati with 25 mainline and 25 express gates.

Now with the flight hours being transferred to East Coast focus cities, the opportunity to turn Pittsburgh into a hub like Delta has in Cincinnati appears over.

By lowering the debt, the Commonwealth has taken a huge step to make PIT attractive to carriers that might be able to use 10 gates and gain market share by offering fares that will actually drive traffic to PIT (instead of pushing it to CLE or CAK).

Hmm. What an interesting concept.

In reality, US never had any intention of keeping a hub in PIT and the Commonwealth has properly in both timing and in whom they choose to help (all carriers at the airport, not just the bankrupt one that robbed the proverbial piggybank at the 11th hour of Chapter 11).

Oh, and CVG has some of the highest fares in the country. PIT will too, until LUV finishes in PHL, anyway.

Damn skippy!

-- Lower costs @ PIT
-- other airlines fly from PIT instead of Akron, Clumbus, and Cleveland
-- More choices besides U
-- Lower fares
-- Origionating traffic increases
-- More flights from PIT
-- Eveyone (almost) is happy.

-- U loses.

Am I missing something?
