One Way $444 vs $604

Well let's see: PHX - HNL is what 5 hours. That is 5000 gallons of jet fuel (one way) at $4 per gallon. So, that is $40,000 round-trip for the flight in gas only. I don't know how many folks the West 757s carry, but the East 757 carrys either 193 (non-ETOPs) or 176 (ETOPS). Assuming a full flight with passengers who are actually paying for the ticket and not using Dividend Miles. Using 193 as the passenger count it comes to $207.25 per passenger just to cover the fuel; minus taxes, landing fees, aircraft leases and labor. I would guess that Hawaiian is losing money on their fares and maybe just coveing their fuel costs on the flight. I would guess Hawaiian just wants the cash flow.

Because Hawaiian wouldn't think for charging for cargo in the bin below?

Even if everything was equal, I would have chosen HA. I would take CO through EWR to PHX before I would buy a ticket on US.

Unless it's free on US (jumpseat usually,) I look elsewhere for my travel needs.

And that's the beauty of living in America! You don't like the product, you purchase from a company that offers you the value you are looking for. I agree, most airlines offer a superior product to US (albeit, at a loss....).

The question is, tho, each time you buy a ticket on OA, do you feel the need to start a thread to compare every single other airline to the fares at US? Then ask, wittingly I might add, "Guess which airline I chose?"

I can't wait to compare my milk prices in a "Whole Foods v SuperFresh" thread... stay tuned!

oooh, tell us! tell us! we care!
:mf_boff:

Hawaiian is not losing their shirt.

They have picked up the slack from Aloha and in fact have added new planes to their fleet and are in the process of hiring more pilots, flight attendants and mechanics.

They also have an excellent reputation and DOT ratings.

Right. Please show me where they are rolling in the dough with the current oil prices.

Never said their DOT ratings weren't spectacular.

So, here I am needing to book a one-way flight from HNL to PHX next April after a cruise to Hawaii.

US Airways wants $604.00 per person to fly the route. Hawaiian only will charge $444.00 for the same nonstop routing and, rather than flying all night, we will arrive at midnight.

Hawaiian charges $25.00 for the second checked bag, US Airways charges $15.00 for the first bag and $25.00 for the second bag.

Hawaiian provides a meal, US Airways may have a purchased option available if they aren't sold out by the time they get to me.

Hawaiian flies 767, US Airways is on a 757.

Guess which one I chose.....

Not sure I get the point. It seems that this re-inforces the companys position whenever people say "raise the fares". Our's is more expensive, so you chose the cheaper..good decision, but that doesn't mean US was cheaper at a certain point of the sales process..US has many fewer seats.

You've just proved why fares need to stay as low as possible......people go for the cheap.

Talking about price and product US does NOT beat the competition. Other airlines (most actually) that offer more amenities than US for the same or approximate price are not losing any more or any less than US. It just seems that other airlines even in THIS environment offer more for less or at least the same price. I agree that we are in survival mode but this environment while necessary leaves the flood gates WIIIIIIDE open for people like those running US. Nothing wrong with making money. I just don't see how other airlines offer more for their price AND....AND in a CLEAN environment. That remains a mystery. With all this being said I DO find it pointless to post fare comparisons. Whats the point? Nothings changing.

I don't know how "horrible" the planes look on the East, but on the West side of things..the planes are looking just fine with the occasional bad day. Sorry, but west side of things, just seem to be going much better. hmmm....i wonder if it's the glass half full/emtpy thing?

For those who questioned what was the point, the point was that ten months away from flight US Airways "cheap" flight was $0.21 per mile and Hawaiian was $0.15. In that market Hawaiian offers a better product and I don't think anyone here can realistically argue otherwise. US Airways is treating Phoenix like a fortress hub and have foolishly been doing so for awhile, despite the presence of Southwest and, to a lesser degree, the other major airlines.

I generally know my flight plans many months in advance and am willing to let an airline have my money ten months before flight in exchange for the best combination of price, quality and comfort. In this specific market US Airways actually has less available nonstop seat miles between HNL and PHX, charges $160.00 more, doesn't offer complimentary food or beverage and doesn't offer a nicer plane. So just why should I give them an extra $160.00 per person when they cannot justify that additional sum for any additional service for that money. In fact, since they charge for the first checked bag, the difference would not be $160.00, but rather $175.00.

Oh please, they are filthy!! And the only time they really get cleaned is when we go to JFK, or Mexico! All the LAS cleaners need to be fired, they don't even sanitize the lavs anymore, or spray them down!

This is EXACTLY why we're downsizing LAS...We don't need any lazy employees out West. Lets bring them all back East...Eaaasstttt....

Was the US Airways fare of $604 based on an employee ID20, or just from the US Airways web site, or another travel web site?

Now could we move on to more relevant topics.

I agree. What should we talk about? Hmmm....Is Parker's plan really to setoff fuel costs by selling sodas, eliminating $.03 stale pretzels, providing no value to the customer, alienating high yield customers, remaining high on the list of DOT complaints, and keeping the employees miserable? Or does he have a backup?
