So, here I am needing to book a one-way flight from HNL to PHX next April after a cruise to Hawaii.

US Airways wants $604.00 per person to fly the route. Hawaiian only will charge $444.00 for the same nonstop routing and, rather than flying all night, we will arrive at midnight.

Hawaiian charges $25.00 for the second checked bag, US Airways charges $15.00 for the first bag and $25.00 for the second bag.

Hawaiian provides a meal, US Airways may have a purchased option available if they aren't sold out by the time they get to me.

Hawaiian flies 767, US Airways is on a 757.

Guess which one I chose.....

and your point is???? This is a cutthroat industry we're in my friends...Cough up or be nickeled and dimed but hey...good call on going on Hawaiian their employees will treat us like one of their own.

Well let's see: PHX - HNL is what 5 hours. That is 5000 gallons of jet fuel (one way) at $4 per gallon. So, that is $40,000 round-trip for the flight in gas only. I don't know how many folks the West 757s carry, but the East 757 carrys either 193 (non-ETOPs) or 176 (ETOPS). Assuming a full flight with passengers who are actually paying for the ticket and not using Dividend Miles. Using 193 as the passenger count it comes to $207.25 per passenger just to cover the fuel; minus taxes, landing fees, aircraft leases and labor. I would guess that Hawaiian is losing money on their fares and maybe just coveing their fuel costs on the flight. I would guess Hawaiian just wants the cash flow.

And HA is losing money hand over fist on this route, apparently?

Or, the lower fares are sold out on US, is that your point? Who cares? Do you need the support of your online community to make your decision? Seems like a no-brainer to most of us.....

I believe your fuel cost of $207.25 is round trip. The cost one way would be $104, so Hawaiian could be covering costs with a one-way fare of $444.

Seriously who gives a sh*t? This is getting a bit ridiculous. Buy whatever ticket you want. Why come on an internet messageboard and post this crap? Is your life that lacking in entertainment? This is beyond old meme now.
We get it everyone hates US. You're not going to fly on US anymore. Now could we move on to more relevant topics.

The point is our competitor is providing a better product for less money on a wide body plus not having to fly a red-eye.

US needs to get their act straight. Everyone talks about how Southwest is beating US up and here Hawaiian is slapping US around.
Grrr

I would have chosen HA also. I checked for April 20 and zero seats have been sold. I wouldn't be surprised to see our Hawaii flights cut back due to the cost of fuel.

Well said, flybynite. HP FA We hope you have a great vacation!

. . . rather than flying all night, we will arrive at midnight.

For that midnight arrival you'll also give up most of your day. Since you are arriving on a cruise, it probably wouldn't matter to you, but to some the schedule is more important. Also, the midnight arrival rules out any further air travel from PHX, you either drive, or wait until morning.

With others, I'm glad it worked out for you.

And our competitior is losing their shirt offering the same product with all the enhanced amenities, not to mention flying a widebody, rest assured.

US needs to get their act straight.

Oh, but they are getting their act together. Soaring fuel costs have caused them to charge for each added amenity. It's not to pi$$ you off, it's not for the bad press, it's for survival. Plain and simple.

But please, let's keep these repetitive fare threads going! Shouldn't someone be asking "Why don't we just raise the fares?" soon?
