ARLINGTON (theHub.com) - In a recent meeting between leaders of the Air Line Pilots Association and US Airways Chairman David Bronner, a question arose about the number of pilot positions in management compared to Southwest Airlines. The issue was researched and it was determined that US Airways' staffing compares favorably to Southwest. Here are the details according to the most recent comparison information available: US Airways has 17 pilot positions in management for 3,389 active pilots versus 29 at Southwest, which has 3,944 pilots. Southwest's management structure includes a chief pilot and assistant chief pilots overseeing each of its seven crew bases, in addition to an additional management layer of two regional chief pilots. US Airways, meanwhile, has a leaner structure in its six domiciles (the hubs plus New York, Washington and Boston) with five chief pilots and four assistant chief pilots. They all report to the senior director of flight.

It's a strawman. The chief pilots at Southwest spend a lot of their time conducting interviews and other hiring related activites.

U's management pilots have not had to worry about that (hiring) for years.
