US will be moving to the new "Z" concourse at IAD sometime in the 8/15-9/15 timeframe, which will also be the first co-location w/ HP. New nonstop service to Altoona will be introduced 3x daily on the beechcraft. Altoona's current service to PIT will be reduced to one daily departure. There will also be an additional daily flight to CLT on an ERJ.

Expect a slew of new service from IAD by the end of the year. Also, expect any colgan service in PIT to be moved to IAD by the end of the year.

Gso2pit:

This is part of the reduction in Pittsburgh flying we discussed in a different topic. This schedule/service change(s) will place more pressure on Independence Air and create more United code share revenue for the new US Airways.

This is great news. I've basically given up flying US because of the long communte to DCA or BWI from my home. Looks like the Z Terminal doesn't require a shuttle ride.

Yes, Colgan's new nonstop service to Altoona will really put the squeeze on
Independence Air.

I could have sworn you wanted US Airways to not codeshare with UA anymore?

That concourse should give US a bit of an advantage for IAD O&D traffic. However, it won't make connections to United for all that "United code share revenue for the new US Airways" very easy.

Whlinder:

The Dulles - Altoona service is just one route, with others likely to be added. It's my understanding the intent is to boost point-to-point service with both Mainline and Express flying from this large metropolitan area to other cities.

In addition, the combining of America West and US Airways facilities could lower unit costs for the new company.

In regard to code share revenue, the move will increase code share opportunities between US Airways and United and other Star Alliance carriers, which should increase US Airways' incremental revenue.

Since I haven't been to IAD for over a year and haven't paid any attention to the Z gates since we moved to the A/B terminal, a question. Is the Z concourse still the "trailer park" arrangement or is it a real concourse now?

US Airways didn't add the AOO route; the DOT did when they selected Colgan to serve the city from IAD. I find this part the most interesting:

The Mayor of Altoona states that the selection of Colgan Air’s Option 3 (nonstop service
to Dulles for Altoona) would be in the best interests of the citizens of Altoona. He states
that travclers would make the most use of the service each week from Altoona to
Washington’s Dulles Airport. The Chairperson of the Altoona-Blair County Airport
Authority supports the selection of service to Dulles Airport “where there seems to be a
better selection of flights and better fares.â€￾ The manager of the Altoona-Blair County
Airport states that the selection of Colgan Air’s Option 2 or 3 (either of which would
provide Altoona with service to Dulles Airport) best suits the needs of patrons of the
airport. He states that Colgan Air has supported the airport and community since 2002
and selccting the carrier to provide service to Dulles Airport “will continue the trend that
they havc started for this region.â€￾

Wonder why they didn't want service to PIT?

Where are these new P2P routes going to come from at an airport that has a full legacy hub and the largest low-fare hub in the country (by departures)? Wasn't this already tried at IAD with some red painted planes called MetroJoke? Hey, when DH fails, I think adding some capacity to IAD (especially with all the RJs US is going to be flying around) is smart. But until then I am very curious as to where these new P2P routes are going to be. All I can think of is the Caribbean. If so, that might work.

In addition, the combining of America West and US Airways facilities could lower unit costs for the new company.
It better, or else the merger will fail miserably.

So you've finally realized that the Star carriers aren't going to come to your hubs so you have to fly where the Star carriers fly? Yes, adding US flights to a major Star hub should add codeshare revenue to US. But again, I thought you wanted the UA partnership to end?

Whlinder:

Domestic code share agreements are here and they will stay. I want the best domestic code share agreement that US Airways can obtain, whether it’s with United or another company.

When I made my comment regarding United and the alliance -- that you’re referring to in your post above -- it was prior to their recent S.1113 hearings and its future was much more “murkyâ€￾. It’s unclear if United can survive (US Airways too for that matter) and if it’s going to fail then I want US Airways to have another alliance partner that is a stronger carrier.

If United remains US Airways' code share partner then I want the maximum benefit for the soon to be Tempe-based company.

Why doesn't US try flying 100+ departures from IAD, with low-cost flights on big planes to popular destinations, and lots of Express feed?

Oh, right, they already did that.

But don't worry, I'm sure it's real easy reentering a market you pulled out of, while other airlines have been growing there in the meantime.

Right, pulled out of TWICE ! ! !

Maybe someday in the near future ( HP ) we will finally get a REAL MARKETING department!
