This is the downside to the seniority system. His Medals and military service should count for something. but it doesn't. Sad, very sad.

The seniority system is what makes airline careers tougher than others to leave and begin life a new company. It matter not what you have done before in this industry....

You are right - the seniority system has it's flaws. And, as UseYourHead said, it makes leaving a job and starting over unappetizing unless you're either very junior or furloughed.

However, having worked both within the seniority system and at companies where seniority was a foreign concept, I'll take the seniority system every time.
