More merger talk form Doug

True, but with AA strong in ORD and NW strong in MSP/DTW, the government might require too much in terms of divestitures to make it worthwhile.

AA wants one thing only. Access over the pacific. A turn key operation like there purchase of Easterns Central and South America operation.

This is starting to sound familiar.

I hear the 80s are coming back, and they’re better than ever!

Asked if Mr. Parker was actively engaged in any conversations with rival airlines, the chief executive stumbled a bit and said: "I probably should not comment on that."

Regards,

USA320Pilot

Sounds like the makings of a classic "Pump and Dump" scheme.

One trip through Philly, and you will realize how hard it is going to be to fix this place...

There's not a snowball's chance that LCC outbids AA for NW. Trust me. B)
trust me, it WILL be northwest airlines.
here is why:
we don't really overlap with them.
we have the same fleet type except for the 747-400&767-200& the 737's. the DC9's are sure to go out the door if and when we merge. we all know the DC-10's are going away. so that leaves us with a fleet of:
747-400
767
757-200/300
737-300/400(might be going away)
A330-200/300
A350(if we ever get them. if not, nw ordered the 787's)
A319/320/321
EMB-190.
the route network would totally work since nw concentrates it's ops to the far east. add that to the exsisting us route network and it fits very well. hubs, you might see something like this. phl/clt/msp/phx. dtw looks good too . the have a nice facility there. remember i said hubs not bases. i am sure they will keep all mentioned above as crew bases as well as lga, bos,&sea. mem ops might be consolidated into clt ops but i could be wrong.
labor , well we all know that the employee group at nw is a bitter one but so were the us labor groups. it can truly work . our pilots share the same union. the f/a just voted in afa. the mechanics i think are iam as well. i am not sure of it but i think they are.
face it , it works . and the govmnt will totally let us merge with nw before they let aa get a hold of nw. why would aa want nw anyway? to screw the nw employees like aa did to twa? at least at airways they will get doh. face it aa, us is making money . we are not the poor bastards we once were . we freaken back wether you guys at aa like it or not . oh did i forget to say that us is making money? oh no i didn't, but i just wanted to emphazize that ..

etops1: Fleet types don't matter. Neither do routes and overlap (or lack thereof). Labor unions? Don't matter (NW mx is AMFA, but they really don't matter, all having been replaced).

Only thing that matters is NRT and China. AA's got a $3 billion head start on LCC (check the unrestricted cash balances of each airline) and there's only one way AA doesn't win the bidding war for NW: If it can run up the price high enough on LCC so that LCC is doomed to fail because it overpays.

When UA announces its acquistion/merger with either CO or DL, you can bet that AA moves to buy NW.

AA's cash position is probably gonna improve further if the pension legislation gets signed, and right now the odds look good for that. AA will get 10 years to make up its underfunded pension deficit, which should cost a mere $230 million/yr - very managable for a $23 billion revenue airline.

You may be right. Maybe LCC ends up with NW. But I doubt it. Hey, I can understand everyone at the former HP drooling over the chance of flying to China and Japan and beyond. A320Pilot would love to command a 747. But it ain't gonna happen. B)

Screw AA!

Let the games begin! PROFIT is the name of the game, not smoke & mirrors accounting. Pardon me but which Legacy carrier posted SWA like performance?

Wasn't Arrogant Airlines, I mean AA was it?

You been drinkin' tonight, Piney? :D

What's your point?

Yes, LCC reported a huge profit in the second quarter. AA reported a profit almost as large ($291 million v. $305 million at LCC).

Cheers.

YES, I have been! Abbaye De Rocs 9.5% Belgian Ale to be exact.

Now before you get all full of yourself AA is what DOUBLE the size of US and posted LESS Profit that US?

On a net dollar basis and a percentage of gross revenue basis US kicked AA arse!

See that's why I drink Belgian Ales!!! For clarity! :p

PS: welcome to a winner's bulletin board!!!!
1. AA has never declared bankruptcy. US has twice and AW has once. AA has paid all it's creditors and protected it's shareholders. US has shafted it's creditors and shareholders TWICE; AW shafted them once. US and AW also got loans from the government which kept them alive.

2. At AA we had ONE round of concessions but we still are one of the highest paid employees wage wise among the legacies and we still have our pensions and other post retirement benefits. The all out gang raping of the US employees consisted of THREE rounds of paycuts (making them one of the lowest paid wage wise), lots of farmed out work, loss of pensions and other retirement benefits.

If AA had US labor contracts and other "bankruptcy benefits", AA's net profit would have been substantially higher.

You can't compare apples to oranges.

NWA's Unions:
Pilots: ALPA
F/A's: AFA(Just this month)
Ramp: IAM
Customer Service: IAM
Stores: IAM
Mechanic and Related: AMFA on Strike.

Where have you been etops1 AMFA has been on strike for months and months at NWA.

US will not be buying NWA, does not have the cash and AA would be drooling over the Pacific Routes as would UA.

US has not even completed one merger, taking on another would be a nightmare.

How much of a roll will institutional money play in who gets NWA. Will investors like Bronner show up again. Will Airbus play a roll? LCC has the best labor contract in place and could make it workout well for an investor. AA is still recovering from the TWA mess.

This is just a question for some of you guys that have a deeper understanding of it than I???????

 Is NWA --DOH-- or --FCFS-- with company SA travel? Awaiting PHXMAMA's reply... Yea, I'll admit it's all about me, myself and I, and of course, 'what's in it for me?'
