American Eagle service to Gainesville, Florida is apparently a go, pending the approval of subsidies from Gainesville Regional Airport. Continental Express and Continental Connection carriers Cape Air and Gulfstream International are also look for subsidies. American Eagle would operate from GNV to MIA and DFW; Continental Express to EWR and IAH; Continental Connection to MIA (Gulfstream) and TPA (Cape Air).

i wonder how much the city of Gainesville will be subsidizing the routes. I would like to see Eagle hit some other florida destinos before G'ville (like Pensacola, Tallahasee, Ft. Walton, Sarasota) but I guess if the airport is going to subsidize the route, it will certainly be profitable.

American is asking for a ridiculous amount of money. They want $4 million in revenue guarantees! Gainsville did recently receive a federal subsidy grant of $660,000 for new air service.

What kind of subsisides are they giving to the carriers that are currently there or is it just "new" service they want to guarantee? I know many airlines have come and gone in GNV including COEXP to/from TPA just a couple months/year ago. Didnt last too long.

The first airline I worked for went into GNV from MCO/MIA and OCF. Any Skyway Commuter folks out there?

I know that Delta servers GNV, only now through the commuter affiliates. I remember in the mid 90s taking 737s down there to visit my Grandmother. I think USAirways commuter serves GNV too.

The current carriers at GNV, Delta Connection to Atlanta and USAirways to Charlotte, have no subsidies. They get no money and they don't need it. GNV rakes in the money for them big time, I'm sure. American Airlines is for revenue guarantees for the service and wants GNV to pay some of the set-up costs. They are pretty desperate for expanded air service and have been clamouring for Miami service for a while.

Meanwhile, there were recently rumours that American Eagle was in talks to return to APF. Well, not sure how the talks went, but Continental Connection carrier Cape Air starts MIA-APF in mid-December (the only scheduled commerical airline service to APF), so I don't think we will see them back (besides, ATR-72s are way too big for that market).

While 3 daily frequencies MIA-APF in ERJ-135s would be ideal, I would be satisfied with more frequencies MIA-RSW, since Fort Myers is only about 40 miles north of Naples. Besides, APF is probably not a money-maker anyway, no matter what aircraft fly the route. The current schedule MIA-RSW doesn't include a real early morning RSW-MIA nor a late night MIA-RSW like it did a year or two ago.

i don't think ERJs are permitted to fly to APF. Isn't there a major resitriction on the aircraft that can serve Naples?

i would rather then beef up Ft. Myers service anyway.

I do wish we would go back to Sarasota though.

AKAIK, the only jets banned at Naples are older Stage 2 jets; ERJs exceed Stage 3 specifications and should be able to fly to APF. But there might be other issues precluding their use at APF. The FAA has ruled that the ban is unlawful - don't know the current status of the tussle:

Anyway - I agree with you; I'd rather see service beefed up at RSW (increased frequencies and earlier/later flights) to help with connections. Right now it is impossible to connect to/from the daily 777 MIA-LAX flights to/from RSW. RSW and APF are about 45 minutes apart - it doesn't make a lot of sense to fly tiny planes to both. Better to fly larger planes more often from one (like RSW).

Naples has the demographics of a very high-yielding market. Continental's EWR-APF fares are averaging about $600-$800, and they probably will not have a problem filling the planes between MIA and APF (especially since the total amount of seats they will fly per day between MIA and APF is 72). Though the problem with Naples is everybody and their brother owns a private jet.

How about both with one plane? RSW-APF-MIA and APF-RSW-MIA. AA could offer the choice of frequency or non-stop service at very little additional cost.
