This is for all you union bashers out there disillusioned with your circumstances working for an airline these days. Unions still make a difference and in my personal case it’s actually amazing because I don’t belong to a union but receive all the union benefits regardless. I couldn’t pay union dues if I wanted too. I want to pay the dues considering the benefits we receive for absolutely nothing but can‘t. GE calls our location an experiment, the paying union members call it a sham and I agree with them. We receive everything the unions fight for and will get it for free, not my idea but a fact nonetheless. I am there to support my family and not make a political statement.

Regardless the point of this topic is to point out that unions do clearly make a difference in families standard of living. The disgruntled airline workers on here always bashing unions and a few in particular should seek counseling as their souls are a deep black from all their hatred.

Healthcare is a very big issue but regardless our co-pays stayed the same, wages are up eleven percent over the four year contract but we also have COLA’s with a new formula making the cost of living adjustment increases higher than in the past. The new hires, myself included which means anyone hired within five years receive more vacation, a better off shift rate, the step increases have been increased with a shorter period to receive them. Retirees get pension increases and all current employees have a better pension, it’s now like what U had in the glory days. GE has the best healthcare coverage in the country hands down and the pension is unbelievable. This is all due to the unions including the IAM which represents GE workers also.

This did not come about by the company’s big heart. The company is making money because the employees are happy and producing products and meeting customer requirements only because the unions are making sure the employees are happy. Unions still play a role in America labor and the ones lucky enough to be under an union umbrella are the ones doing the best with all other America labor working twice as long and twice as hard and still not there.

Without unions we all would be slaves, even the ones not under a union are benefiting from a union indirectly in some manner or fashion, fact

To the unions bashes on here, grow up and seek counseling ASAP before you’re beyond help, join reality again.

Long Live the Unions!

Unions have done well in years past. They have greatly impoved working conditions of men and women, and increased benefits. In the same breath, however, you can cite numerous occasions where Unions have destroyed their companies. What good is the union if there is no company to pay your wages anymore?

Moreover, I often wonder why Unions hardly ever look at the big picture. They often attempt to negotiate things that only help them NOW; but refuse to look at the ramifications of such behavior?

Look at outsourcing. Obviously, this was not entirely caused by unions... but you can make a damn good argument that Unions sped up the process.

I understand that Unions (or a similar institution) is neccessary to combat the equally shortsighted corporation. I wish, however, that unions will step back every once in a while to try and see the forest from the trees.
