UK Terrorist Plot Thwarted

UK has raised their security status to "Critical", the highest level.

U.S. has raised the threat status to Red (highest) for flights from the UK, and Orange for all other flights.

DHS is expected to announce restrictions to carry-on items.

UK restricting carry-on items to wallets/pocket-sized purses, travel papers/documents, medication, baby food/formula (must be tasted by parent in front of security personnel), eye glasses (without case), contacts. All other items must be checked.

Looks like it might be a long day at the airports.....

TSA Statement:

Change To The Nation's Threat Level For The Aviation Sector

"Due to the nature of the threat revealed by this investigation, we are prohibiting any liquids, including beverages, hair gels, and lotions from being carried on the airplane. This determination will be constantly evaluated and updated when circumstances warrant. These changes will take effect at 4:00 AM local time across the country. Travelers should also anticipate additional security measures within the airport and at screening."

'Airlines terror plot' disrupted

A plot to blow up planes in flight from the UK to the US and commit "mass murder on an unimaginable scale" has been disrupted, Scotland Yard has said.
It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled in hand luggage on to as many as 10 aircraft.

Police were searching premises with 21 people in custody after arrests in London, High Wycombe and Birmingham.

High security is causing delays at all UK airports. The threat level to the UK has been raised by MI5 to critical.

According to MI5's website, critical threat level - the highest - means "an attack is expected imminently and indicates an extremely high level of threat to the UK".

Three US airlines are believed to have been targeted.

US Airways is not one of the targeted airlines as reported at this moment.

There have been a lot of flights in and out of the UK cancelled. No carry ons are being allowed through security, no handbags - only clear plastic bags with wallets, travel docs, medications, and baby care item are permitted. Security delays are massive. No beverages allowed at all.

Sorry if this is not an appropriate posting for the US Air forum, but we are all affected by this.

Hooray to the Brits for preventing this tragedy!!!!!!

And the TSA has just raised the domestic security alert to orange. Get ready to spend more time at the security checkpoints.

Also, the TSA has banned liquids from carry-ons as well. No hair gel, lotion, contact lense solution, bottled water, etc.

I do hope they don't go to the extreme the British have seen fit to implement.... not even allowed to carry-on cell phones, business documents, iPod, valuables that won't fit in a small wallet, or keys that include remote keyless entry. Given that I primarily fly into and out of PHL, I refuse to check bags. If I can't even arrive with my cell phone and car keys, I won't travel.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this view.
I don't see this as doing anything but harm for the financial shape of the domestic carriers if similar is implemented at home.

Just went through security at PHL. It is a NIGHTMARE. They are confiscating everything--toothpaste, hair cream/gel, some deodorant, ANYTHING liquid, lipsticks, etc. Employees go through heavier screening as well. Saw several pulled aside for more detailed search. they are not guaranteeing that bags will get to your destination on time and if they don't, you have to come back to the airport to pick it up.

It is going to be a long day...that is for sure....but let's be thankful they stopped what could have happened.

Does this apply to flight crews too or just passengers?

I have just heard that crew members ONLY are excempt from the Liquids ban. They are not permitted to bring beverages, but they are allowed to bring gels, toothpaste, shampoo, etc.....

This is what I HEARD and cannot comfirm validity.

Nope.....just got a call from a flight attendant that just went through PHL security....and they took EVERYTHING!!!

I just spoke to DCA inflight and they said now the ban does not apply to CREW...so who knows. I'm sure if you asked 10 different TSA screeners you would get 10 different answers!

I just went through security. Our crew as well as the two in front of us had all of our bags searched and then researched at the gate--there were extra random searches past security. They confiscated all liquids (water, saline solutions, perfume), all gels (shave creams, hair gels, toothpaste), all makeup except powders and brushes. Many crew members went back out security to check their bags. One mother had her liquid formulas, juice, and water bottles taken. Security lines at DCA went out the door. It appeared to us that TSA were intent on checking the bags of every single crew member.

This is INSANE! We can not check our bags...and I need my toothpaste!

absolutely rediculous, crew memebers should be exempt from these knee jerk bannings
so now crewmembers have to buy new toiletries on every single overnight? (Assuming there is someplace open they can buy them at each RON)??
