If AA and US Airways do merge, what will happen to JFK and Philadelphia

FWAAA, I actually have been to both T5 and T8. I came up with the idea because I thought that if AA swaps terminals with JB, if PHL is eliminated, then make the swap and expand T5. Plus, the neighboring T6 was demolished.

700UW, I am NOT a kid and I do not know the game you are saying that you think I play. I do not play that game and you can't judge me who I am if you never even met me in person before. I know I can write nonsense, but that does not mean I am a kid. Enough already!

If AA had wanted a terminal built like T-5, then that's what AA would have designed in 1999 when it unveiled the plans for the new T-8. If B6 had wanted a terminal built like T-8, that's what it would have built.

T-8 has about 1.5 million square feet and something like 19 widebody gates for international arrivals. When T-8 is eventually built-out, it will have about 2 million square feet. T-5, on the other hand, has 26 gates built for A320s and E190s in about 640,000 square feet. T-8 has plenty of space devoted to premium lounges while T-5 has none.

AA has already spent over a billion dollars on T-8 and remodeling/expanding T-5 to make it work for AA would cost at least another billion dollars or more,

When US and AA combine, PHL isn't going to be downsized significantly and even if it was, there's not a chance that AA/US and B6 would trade JFK terminals.

Probably correct, unless the City of Philadelphia decides to go through with its plan for another runway through the UPS real estate, and attempt to stick the bill for it on AA/US. The city loses a huge amount of leverage when this merger goes through. Be interesting to see if the city is willing to have to wall off Concourse A, a la PIT, DAY, etc. in the aftermath of the management leaving the premises.

Good point. That's the $1.6 billion runway and $5.3 billion expansion plan:

And by time it happens, the costs will probably be double or triple the numbers above. That project could make Philly an awfully expensive place to land.

Heard in the news today, JB is expanding their JFK terminal with a new International Arrivals Hall...to the tune of $170 million. Construction starting immediately and completion expected in 2014. Why would they do that? I know this is not the JB thread, but I posted here as a follow on to the conjecture that JB and AA might trade terminals. It may be nothing but coincidence, but why now? And why rush things?

It might be because their international flights currently arrive at T4 at JFK. Delta is expanding T4 to serve as their primary terminal, and I just heard that the project is ahead of schedule. Once Delta moves in there, Jet Blue will need a new place to arrive.

I don't think the relatively tiny B6 expansion (just 145,000 square feet) for its terminal 5i would be sufficient space for AA to handle all of its widebody international arrivals but should be enough for B6's several A320 international arrivals. T-8 has 19 widebody gates capable of handling international arrivals and its FIS area looks like 145,000 square feet all on its own.

the idea of the merger is to compete with united and delta. the moron that started this thread is stuck in a time warp. phl is a great hub, so is dca and clt. if you'd have paid attention, you'd know that the merger is about keeping the east bases to feed traffic to aa and vice versa not to shrink. some people get on here and spew garbage with no facts to back it up and the lemmings follow them. no wonder we can't get contracts done and are stuck.

Well said DCA. There are a sufficient amount of IDIOTS on this Forum.....
