Growing pains

New carrier, more traffic present challenges for PTIA

Mick Normington

The Business Journal Serving the Greater Triad Area

In a little more than a week, Independence Air will start serving passengers out of Piedmont Triad International. But beyond the expected arrival of the discount carrier, the airport is moving rapidly to handle other anticipated growth.

The good thing (for US) is that it will take some time for Indepenance Air to get brand recognition and fill up those seats, to GSO and otherwise. Without the backing of the United reservations system, they may be in for a shock trying to operate those RJs in a low-cost format.

Leaving Boston on MONDAY MORNING there looked to be maybe 6 folks sitting at the Independence Air gates

Thanks for the link. While GSO is easy to fly into and out of, it is good to see the improvements coming. It is also nice to see something posted here with out all the pi55ing and moaning.

Independence is being aggressively matched by all of the major carriers. It will be increasingly difficult for a new LCC to ramp up when every major carrier is matching fares and offering a better product. If you were a passenger, would you fly an RJ to RJ connection when you could fly a major carrier on at least one of the two legs? They might have an advantage for the local IAD traffic on which they are competing w/ UA also w/ RJ's but even there UA should have the advantage based on the strength of its frequent flyer program.
IFly will burn through plenty of cash this year getting set up and will probably not be successful in the long term but it will be one more unwanted irritation for the major carriers that are in its way.

Indy was almost full out of SAV today, and have full flights listed through the week between SAV-IAD...

Oh, BTW, take a look at airlines.net to see their brand new Airbus 319 just out of the paint shop, the first of 28 to arrive in an accelerated sched.

Do not discount this airline folks, They get the airbusses up fast enough and make some cash of most of the RJ routes, and you might have to eat your words...

Like I said, they should not be counted out just yet, they have enough cash to last for sometime, and will soon be the largest carrier out of IAD.

We do what we need to do, and we can compete, if not, well then there will always be someone to take the place of US

The A319s will certainly help them in the long run, that is if they can keep the positive cash flow through their delivery. Those are some expensive aircraft, certainly more expensive than the airline is used to purchasing and operating. The A319 will either make or break the airline.
