An AirAsia flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore lost contact with air traffic control on Sunday, Indonesian media said, citing a Transport Ministry official..

Transport Ministry official Hadi Mustofa said the aircraft, flight number QZ 8501, lost contact with the Jakarta air traffic control tower at 6:17 a.m local time. (6.17 p.m. EST).

The Airbus 320-200 had 155 passengers and crew on board, another Indonesian Transport official said.

There was severe storms and they requested to climb to 38,000 from 33,000.

So now you are an aviation accident expert also?

thankfully, there are and will be professional run accident investigations.

in case you missed the first two, this is now the 3rd accident involving a SE Asian airliner this year.

who knows if the accidents are the least bit connected but bad weather is not restricted to SE Asia.

On CNN today, and aviation expert (I know, I know) also noted that wind shear may have been a factor.

Along with that, he mentioned a 777 flying "nearby"-and in the same direction- was cruising along at ~200 mph faster. If nothing else, 8501 was trying to plow through a serious headwind...

GOD RIP those passengers and crew of QZ8501.       some of the folks think the A320 suffered similar fate to what AF447 suffered   but who knows.    May those victims RIP

WT  just fyi  they still have not found MH 370   so its hard to say if that crashed  given no debris  yet

here is a pretty good article written by likely either a DL or US 330 pilot.

also, a very lengthy article that includes a list of passengers.... note the number of passengers with a combination of western and Indonesian names even though the flight was predominantly Indonesian, and also supposedly with a high percentage of Chinese Christians.

(CNN)The tail section of AirAsia Flight QZ8501 has been found, Indonesian search and rescue chief Bambang Soelistyo said Wednesday.

Searchers have been scouring the choppy waters of the Java Sea for remains from the commercial jet since it lost contact on December 28 with 162 people on board.

Finding the tail section is significant because that is where flight recorders are located in the Airbus 320-200, the aircraft model of Flight QZ8501.

Unfortunately, the piece of the tail section found and recovered is not the piece containing the flight recorders.  CNN reported earlier this morning that they may have picked up some new pinging from an area relatively near the site where this piece was found.  Let's hope so.
