I never understood why US cut this route given that (1) it was in the top 20 markets from PIT, (2) US was the leading carrier on the route in market share, and (3) the average yield was over 25 cents per mile with a stage length that is well above the system average. If your goal is to have a "focus city," you don't cut markets with 300 daily passengers and keep markets with fewer than 20 daily passengers (like AVP. CMH, DAY, ERI, etc.)

I didn't want to start another thread with this - afraid it might be moved to the WN forum....

Southwest: Dressed To Kill... Competitors
The low-fare airline's new boss is taking aggressive steps to boost capacity and profits

Gary C. Kelly is a steady, mild-mannered former accountant. But don't let that fool you. The new 49-year-old chief executive of Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV ) is also spearheading some of the most aggressive moves that the low-fare king has made in years.

Is this a possible response to SW? Do you think SW will announce PIT-HOU nonstops on Thursday? I tend to think so. We will see before the end of the week!

Ya know, I'm not big on such things. But since you seem to be, just who was the "first to report this here"???

Yes this is a response to Southwest..

Yes its nice to know USA320 will be flying this route once again..

Yes Southwest is going to pile drive this into US Airways..

US Airways 9.9 cents a seat mile. Southwest 7.85 a seat mile..

Who do you think is going to win?

Southwest adding service to PHL. Will announce CLT this year as will jetBlue..

USA320.. You need to apply to jetBlue.. You can fly right seat on the Airbus or you can fly right seat on the E190.. Just so long as you are in the right seat for the rest of your career..

Company Stooge.

I'm amused by the fact that one of the cheerleaders for pulling down "unprofitable PIT flying" is reporting the news that the company is bringing some of that flying back, ostensibily as a response to the fact that LUV is poised to add such flying.

But then again, usaviation (and some of it's posters) do tend to peg my personal "irony" meter.

Why would CCY add more flying to a distant station from an "unprofitable" focus city?

Bueller?

Wait--E-170s are a "competitive LCC response." That's it!

(note--I recognize that Jim posted this first, but it's too much to pass up).

What is this crap anyway? You attack someone for
posting a news release. Dhiarreah of the mouth
does not help you appear credible. Why don't YOU
invest the time and money it takes to make it to
the left seat of a mainline plane, and then we'll
all see how you fare on this forum.

PIT-IAH should never have been temporarily
discontinued, and with an MAA E-170, US will
match or beat WN costs on this routing. You
sir, don't appreciate the significance of this
news release or the battle that is to come.

Maybe we should just park all the mainline planes and get a bunch of 170's - that should have the money pouring in.....

Jim

I'm glad to see PIT-IAH come back. Of course, I was glad to see PIT-CVG come back, but I noticed that it's going to disappear in March......again.

Maybe the new plan is to keep OA's guessing as to what routes US is actually flying. That way everyone will have to scramble to figure out how to counter the move.

Someone at CCY likes playing chess just a little bit too much.

Looming battle? You are either a Pilot or a senior company official.

Looming battle against Southwest.. A company who is worth close to 16 billion
dollars. Has Billions in unencumbered assets, has a billion dollars in real cash (not play money like US Airways has) and has two credit lines untapped for 500 million each.. They have banks lined up out the door willing to give them money.

Looming battle.. Your a fool. E-170 against a 737NG.. Right..

Face facts, your going to get hammered and when the time comes you will be
putting in your resume at JetBlue and Southwest and you will be begging for a job.

Southwest is going to start up and then they are going to snap it off in US Airways backside in PIT and PHL.. Once they start their next station is going to be CLT.

Just like a shark.. They smell the blood in the water..

Post away MSA!!

Sigh,

As usual, any news is bad news to some of you around here.

Guess you would rather we not have the route, or any route structure at all I guess...
