The following letter was sent today by the CLT secretary-treasurer (for the outsiders, that's a non-voting position), announcing his retirement. I think it gives some good food for thought....

Ladies and Gentlemen of Council 90:
It is with sadness that I announce my retirement from US Airways effective September 10, 2004. I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your friendship and professionalism over the past 25 years. It has been a great privilege to work with you fine group of airmen. I will miss all of you deeply.
I appreciate all of your support of me in my efforts on your behalf as the Council 90 Secretary-Treasurer. While I did not attend most of the MEC Meetings or carry a vote for you, I did all that I could given the limitations of the office I held to provide the very best representation I could when the opportunity presented itself. One of the great joys of ALPA work is dealing with the individual pilot and helping him or her resolve his or her problems. In the purest sense, that individual pilot is why we run for office and serve.
I would like to leave you all a final thought as my family and I begin the next chapter of our lives. The times, as they have been for the past few years, are turbulent and uncertain. All of us, and our families, are contemplating the future with great apprehension. Emotions are running high with good reason. I know the players in this latest drama that is unfolding with our MEC quite well. They are sharply divided in their opinions. Each of them believes in their positions passionately. They are motivated by a sincere desire to procure the very best result for all of us. I ask all of you, as we go forward, to at least think of this and understand as I do that their hearts are in the right place, even if you feel that their heads aren’t.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you and your families during these trying times. I have been asked by those of you who knew of my decision to retire what I planned to do next. Fortunately, I have the ability to take the next few months off, and I plan to do just that. I suspect that you might find me on a golf course somewhere or on my bike. I definitely plan to take some time to decompress before starting the next chapter of my life. I am already warmed by thoughts of the time I have spent with all of you over the past 25 years. I hope you will all remember these good times, as I will.
As Bob Hope said every time he performed, “Thanks for the memories.â€
Take care and God bless.
