Would the crew have been within their rights to refuse the trip if they thought one of their own number might pose a risk to the safety of the flight or her own health, or at the very least demand Ms. Snow be replaced?
Good question. Closest situation I can think of was the UA HKG flight where the HKG-based FAs refused to fly after their 747 suffered some graffiti - the smiley face and "Bye-Bye" drawn in the dirt near the tail. The pilots initially balked but after a cursory inspection and a management "talking to," they were ok with flying.

The FAs refused and were fired and sued UA for wrongful termination. That's not an advantageous position to be in. Had the AA FAs refused to fly to FRA and if the flight had cancelled (very real possibility as reserves aren't always sufficient to cover), then the FA wouldn't have flipped out, and it would be tougher for them to argue that their hunch about her was completely correct. My guess is that AA will modify some protocols so that if crewmembers have real concern about the mental health of a colleague, someone might take it more seriously next time.
