Clouds are parting

On Thursday, new CEO Gerard Arpey said business improved during the first two weeks of his tenure because of stronger bookings and lower fuel costs, sending shares of AMR up 3.6% to $6.64. Since April 25, when the world''s largest airline worked out a last-minute deal with unions over labor cuts, which included the resignation of former CEO Don Carty, shares have jumped more than 50%.

Arpey''s comments came at a breakfast in its Fort Worth, Texas, headquarters, where the CEO told reporters he was hopeful that the $1 billion loss the company racked up in the first quarter will represent a low point. He added: the future is uncertain, but the clouds have parted a bit.

One big issue for American, outside of labor issues, will be reducing the amount it needs to pay out in terms of aircraft leases. AMR is attempting to restructure those lease deals and said it was close to reaching terms with lessors, but at the breakfast, Arpey added caution that the company wasn''t yet in the clear.

I''m optimistic that we are going to get to the finish line and hit the target. But we are not there yet, Arpey said.

Those are not clouds parting!

Well put!!!

Let's just wait and see!

We still have options. Nobody said we were going to take this with just a whine or two.

Most I know will not just walk away from a rape without a fight.

How many times do I need to say this?

You guys are so abused but you continue to return for it every day !!

You come to work - bend over - and spread the glu'teus max'i•mus continually.

That says more about you than it does about your company or union.

You must be staying for some reason. Maybe you are just chronic whiners and it would not matter how much pay - benefits - or down time you have.

Could be you enjoy spreading them?

If someone were coming after my gluteus maximus, I would move it out of the way.

What a novel idea!!!!!!!!

There are some who have such a passion for aviation that they have endured the hardship and raping in hopes of change. X-Generation doesn't have that passion for the industry or loyalty to AA. The older generation that has relied upon passion to stay employed in the industry has reached the point where the frustration will submit to the passion. There will be a turnover and employment at AA.

Look for many to leave, and dispense with the whining over the next 3-5 years. Unfortunately, we placed so much emphasis on passion and hope that we have failed to leave ourselves with a quick solution. But from what I hear amongst my co-workers, the re-education and carreer changes are only motivation and implementation of plans away. Yes, it will take a little time, but don't think we are not serious just because we vent on the internet bulletin boards about losing that which we have a passion to accomplish.

Most disgruntled employees will complain, vent, and whine, until the last day out the door. But that sure as hell doesn't mean they dont have a plan and are not leaving. The length of this concession confirms that my standard of living will rise faster with re-training and career change than waiting to see if the sell-out industrial union can even win back half of what we just lost, 5-6 years from now.

See you in school, and here, while I complain about it all the way.

Those in the most danger are those that think this concession corrected the systemic problems at AA. If you are happy, you are likely going to be without a job and without alternative employment when the disgruntled employees close the door for you. It is only those that are complaining, and taking action to leave that will stand the best chance of survivial. It only takes a simple review of Eastern and Pan American Airlines history to see this fact. It is interesting that you can define the low number of airlines that emerged from Bankruptcy, but you cannot define that larger number of employees from past Airlines destroyed by a disgruntled workforce taking huge concessions. I think you best start looking at all of Aviation history, not just that which gives you short term comfort and a short term rise in stock price.

Sometimes, what appears to be nothing more than whining, is actually a fair warning shot fired in advance to warn those that think everything is fine, to do something else and do it soon.
