Charlotte Douglas International Airport was the biggest international hub for Piedmont Airlines and

And?  If the purpose of the post is to imply that PMAA had anything to do with the cuts in CLT International flights, please remember that the people making these decisions (i.e., upper management) came predominantly from the PMUS side of the house.

Biggest hub <for Piedmont>....nearly 30 years ago.  Ok, how many international destinations did it serve from CLT under PI?

CLT has grown purely based on US Airways' positioning it as a major connecting hub, much like DL has done for ATL, though there is far more intl. service from ATL.   And, unless CLT can handle it's own share of O&D traffic, it will likely never be any large scale international gateway.  If it could be, the international terminal plans would be moving forward rather than adding more domestic gates.....  So, no news here.....

So...no new announced route cuts in the article...wonder what the purpose was.  I guess only to support what PMAA people have been saying on here since the merger was announced.

The only thing new for me was that there were plans for an international terminal that are now on hold in favor of domestic growth.

Really? Why don't you give specific details?

GIG, GRU, most European flying

Hopefully Skychefs or GateGourmet will take over catering too.

The pull down of CLT international operations is in full force.

yes, there is nothing new here but it confirms exactly what many of us have said for years that there is no place for 4 major hubs on the east coast or five even east of the Mississippi, all competing for much of the same TATL traffic.

CLT is a great city but it cannot compete for the size of the int'l market in all of the other cities.

the notion that CLT can survive as a predominantly domestic hub is also false. There is no hub anywhere close to the size of CLT that doesn't have a very sizeable int'l presence.

AA/US is cutting the int'l operations now but the domestic operations will come in time.

Precisely.  That domestic hub at STL sure worked out great for AA after the international flying was cut.

CLT was overhubbed to begin with. Raise fares and then pull int'l flights (the first of which is happening across AA's system and the 2nd most heavily concentrated at CLT) and the number of flights at CLT will fall.

It was a given at the time of the merger that there would be hub reductions on AA"s system but everyone at AA has acted as if they are exempt from the same market forces which took place in every other merger.

Reality will hit.

oh... and don't forget that reduced flying will necessitate headcount cuts or else AA's CASM will go thru the roof.

700 and others can keep going on about how CLT has low costs but at the end of the day people don't want to travel to CLT in the same numbers they do to other AA hubs and hubs needs O&D traffic to remain viable.  Yes MIA's CPE is relatively high but as more passengers travel through the facility the unit costs will continue to decrease.  MIA has even gained interest from low cost carriers like Frontier and Interjet.  So yes CLT maybe low cost, but consistent with the USAIR model it is also low revenue.
