All the talk about C.E. Woolman over in a DL thread got me thinking about a battle of the historic airline visionaries who both abbreviated their names and both began with C.

Both were titans of the nascent airline industry. Both were business oracles. But who was oracle-ier?

I was fortunate enough to have my orientation for my initial training class to be held inside the IMAX theatre inside the C.R. Smith museum, and we were shown a presentation and given a private tour covering the extensive history of AA and its growth under "Mr. C.R." as he was known to his contemporaries.

I was shocked to learn that even in 1968, he was said to have known every single American employee by name. Seems like he was a real class act-- Texas style… in addition to being a command politician and businessman.
