Boeing 737's at MIA

Is Jethro Jet still around? I didn't think so....
Try to keep up with the discussion in todays world. Now that people must pay to check bags, they attempt to carry-on anything possible. Of course if they check it at the gate they leapfrog the bag fees. More work that slows the boarding process for gate and ramp agents. If you recall this wasn't an issue when Jethro was operating.

on average with the 737-400 in my station we get anywhere between 25 and 45 jetway bags alone. the 757s we have also the same....but with the airbus we typically get between 15 and 35 bags

back in the metrojet days in bos we get may be 20 bags on top of the 2 to 3 carts of bags esp for pbi and mco

NAW? YOUR KIDDING ME! That cluster that I turn around and see every time we board hasn't been that was for the last quarter decade that I've been doing this job? I was agreeing with you and supportive of the east ground crews that I have been around since I was 3 years old and that old 580 was disparaging.

how many 321's are being delivered by the end of the year

Five more, I think (561 just got here a couple days ago), for a total of 12 on the year. There will be another four delivered between January and March, which if I'm not mistaken will be the first CFM-powered A321s that US has taken since 2009.

Ah yes.Yet another east excuse on why we can't do things that other airlines can.

cv
And the west can do a 30-35 min turn with full in and full out and a crew change and 30+ gate checked bags?.. oh that's rights in PHX there is no such thing, you get min 45 min turn these days.....and in the days of America Worst you didnt have 100% load factors and 30+ gate checked bags to deal with......

for the last quarter decade

... I'm gonna guess you meant "last quarter century?" :)

That said, gate checked bags are a nightmare for any ramp crew; east/west/ or other airline. In my station (not US), they are far and away the largest controllable hurdle to an ontime departure.

It's even more frustrating when you realize that all those bags represent revenue leakage...

I agree, the airlines SHOULD charge for people who gatecheck bags that are too large and should have been checked in the first place. On all my AA flights regardless of which station they depart from the agents make an announcement to "bring your bag to be checked free of charge to your final destination". No efforts made to size the bags, and there are usually many takers. I suppose its more efficient than having people get onboard to then determine there is insufficient bin space for their bag and requiring it be checked last minute. Doesn't Spirit charge like $100 for a gate checked bag that wasn't paid for in advance? They have fees galore and have a sliding scale of bag fees ranging from pre-payment upon purchase, payment at online checkin, kiosk check-in, agent assistant check-in, and gate check. Never flown Spirit but their fees chart online really makes your head spin.

I did, thanks. They are a mess and they cause so many issues. Major stress for agents, passengers and crews.

Lots of people have figured out how to game the system. They gamble that their bag will fit, but also know that even when it doesn't, they've saved the baggage fee. Our agents have bag tag printers at the gates, but we still have both the issue of too many to start with, and the backlog inside the cabin as luggage swims upstream to make it back out to the jetway...
