AMR fourth quarter loss of $214 million exluding special items

Well the airlines are doing fine without you, of the six times I flew in the past three weeks every seat in first was taken as well as most on coach.

Were those international flights?

I apologize for not qualifying my posts with the term "international," but I assumed that everyone would realize that domestic F/J isn't what UA and BA have been talking about. The premium revenue dropoff is in international F/J where the real money is.

My international D-->A upgrades have been clearing without fail, as have cheap coach to C. Although most domestic F is still full, that's primarily because for many years now, the upgrade lists are deeper than the available seats.

I have seen empty F/J seats on flights to Europe and NRT over the past several months.

Sorry, but AA mainline flew about 40,000 flights over the past three weeks and because every seat in F is full on your six flights, everything's fine? Statistics aren't my area of expertise, but I don't think your sample size is large enough to draw such favorable conclusions. Oh, that and your inability to tell us the fares paid by everyone up front. And whether your flights were to LHR, FRA, NRT, GRU, EZE, etc. or merely domestic short hops and mid-cons.

I disagree. Some of our flights are full and most aren't. The ones that are, check the non rev list too.

On top of that, there's a lot of international upgrade inventory available at time of booking right now - signifying that the wizards in charge of that area have already concluded that many premium seats have no chance of selling. Granted, it is January, typically a slow season, but I don't remember seeing so many C5s, C7s and A7s in January of previous years. And many of these flights are in Feb, Mar and April. Never have I seen so many upgrade seats offered so far in advance.

Now has to be a great time to nonrev in F or J to some of those fun exotic destinations.

Your increased revenue is going to employees. Unfortunate for you actives, it's going into Bear's & MCI's pockets:

Given a choice between underfunded pensions or raises, which would you rather have (trick question, I know.....).

FWAAA, I don't know if premium revenues will hold up or not. I know our travel budget is frozen thru the end of 1Q09 (unless the customer pays up front, and there aren't many willing to do that right now). We made money in 2008 and we fully intend to make money in 2009, so if the economy is further in the tank come March, we freeze travel thru June...

eolesen,

It's been (about) 4 years now, since I retired, and Every 1st of the month, I think of....Y O U, and what ever contributions..Y O U.....made towards...M E.
(" A tip of the Hat to you, eric me lad") 😛

Well, I'm definitely feeling better about our loss. DL just announced that they lost $1.4 billion in the 4th quarter alone. We're evidently amateurs at this 4th quarter loss business.

Yahoo article about DL loss

The article also mentions that DL is now planning deeper capacity cuts for this year than previously announced.

On my last trip, (Jan 21-23), I was #1. When I checked the loads before my seq began I was "supposed to be" light in FC for all 8 legs. However, I was full for all 8 legs except one. While that may sound great for AA, the additional passengers sitting in FC as opposed to what I had pulled up, were UPGrades, and Non-Rev. Not exactly money-makers for AA.

So...where it may appear we "don't need a paying passenger" looks can be deceiving.

We need ALL paying passengers and appreciate each and every one of them. Thank you.

I agree. The passengers are the reason we have jobs. Without them this whole thing is pointless. And with less of them our chances for a beneficial new contract go down.
