99 Hires FYI - Here Comes Recall Letter #3

It's simple...if you get a 'poop' letter, tell 'em your coming back.
It's up to you whether you show up....or not.

Take two weeks of vacation from your current employer and go back. Then at the end of indoc decide which company you will resign from. (And don't forget, if you stay at USAir it will be years until you can take two weeks of vacation all at once.)

Easy, peasy. :)

It's a little more complicated than that, although those are correct currently.

Thanks for that Link, Jim, I appreciate that! And Thank You also, Furloughedagain!

Considering working conditions and loss of many Benefits .... those rates are pretty bleak. Now I understand how tough that decision is to make, especially if you love flying.

It is a little more complicated because of how close the compensation really is. At my current employer I make a base salary of $74,000. (there are a few perks...stock, profit sharing, etc. But let's just look at base salary.)

If I return to US Airways as a 737/A320 FO at -- let's just say 4th year pay. (I was about 3 months into my third year when I got furloughed)

737/A320 4th yr FO: $73

Long call (72 hrs): $63072
Short call (76 hrs): $66576
Line (85 hrs): $74460

It's pretty close if I could hold a line.
-USAir puts 10% into a B-fund, current employer gives me $8000 in stock each year. (RSU, not options)

The difference comes down to cost of living at USAir domiciles. (would be a very difficult commute from here)

On the pro side, top end pay at USAir is higher. Safety, training, and standardization are unparalleled. My current employer is good -- but will never be as good as US Airways.

Anyone who tells you this is an easy decision either got hired by SWA or FedEx while on furlough, or is lying.

Ok, here's something interesting. For those considering returning who would plan to move to their domicile:

According to salary.com, the cost of living in New Hampshire is 25.3% higher than where I live today.

Charlotte? 27% higher.

Philadelphia (living in Wilmington area)? 26.4%

In order to have the same standard of living that I do right now, my salary at one of those cities would have to be around $89,000.

That means I could never have the same standard of living as a first officer on the 737 or A320. I could on the 757 if I was able to hold an 85 hour line on that airplane in 2 years.

An upgrade to E190 Captain would work (5th year or better pay) provided I was able to hold an 85 hour block.

According to salary.com,

Rather than checking area salaries, perhaps you should look at the cost of housing which is really the biggest expense for any of us. Get on www.zillow.com and look around some zip codes where you might want to live. BOS prices are out of this world, but CLT and the surrouding areas are very reasonable - probably not much different than Bensonville. Average salaries in a big city like BOS are going to be inflated. Heck, cops there make $150K with overtime.

Ok. Maybe i'm looking in the wrong places. I'm not terribly familiar with New Hampshire.

We paid $88/square foot here in Arkansas for a new construction. Doesn't look like I can come anywhere near that in southern New Hampshire. But if anyone can recommend a town or neighborhood to look at, i'm sure open to it!

Wow ... that's a bargain!!! We had a fellow out last week for an estimate on a two story post & beam garage .... framed out only ..... and it was $70 sq/ft.. A neighbor is adding a second story bedroom addition, framed out is running him $150 sq/ft. He said finished is $170+. This is the suburbs of Orlando, Fl..

Where I live in boston it is about $700.00 per sq ft. It should be a few hundred less in NH.

Dang y'all! In 2004 we paid $67/sq ft for a new one story in DFW including the lot! Included lotsa tile, sprinkler and security systems, wood fence, community w/ pool

Reminds me again of one reason why I don't wanna move...

From a letter posted by Dean, whom they are looking to contact a Jan 2000 hire. The "poop" letters have gotten back to Jan 2000 right now....

Considering they will have to go back to the 1980s it isn't really that far along yet. But considering that they only got about 300 takers out of almost 1800, then it might move along at a good pace. Who can predict tomorrow?

Keep in mind that somebody, somewhere is going to have to be awarded those 190 left seats.
