You might be thinking of the 767-300 when more seats were added to coach. The pax count exceeded the amount of capacity of the existing slide rafts. Another supplemental raft was installed and the problem was solved. No airline can exceed the max seat count the aircraft is certified for.

I hope AA can survive, the people Ive had the pleasure of meeting during my travels with AA have been top notch, cant say so much for US Air.

That's my recollection as well.
