Fuel crisis could be the beginning of end of one or more of the nation's major carriers: experts.

By Chris Isidore, CNN/Money senior writer

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - With new threats of bankruptcies, and appeals for labor concessions and government assistance, the nation's major airlines are facing a crisis that may well spell the end for one or more carrier in the next few years, according to industry executives and experts.

Fuel crisis could be the beginning of end of one or more of the nation's major carriers: experts.

Who goes, who survives?

The question of who might be forced to liquidate is a tougher question to answer.

US Airways, which has already gone in and out of a post-Sept. 11 bankruptcy, is facing the threat of another bankruptcy filing, US Air executives said.

The analyst in that article appears to have an incisive grip on the obvious. Saying that higher fuel prices might mean the demise of one or more airlines is not exactly going out on the prognosticator's limb, is it?

Arab anger over the Abu Ghraib scandal may cause problems for U.S. efforts in the Middle East. Tropical weather systems this summer may interfere with airline schedules in the Caribbean and southern U.S. Outsourcing white collar jobs to foreign countries may cause mortgage foreclosures and personal bankruptcies to increase. Am I ready for the pundit job yet? I have more if you would like to see them. :p

Seems more like one of those "slow news day" filler stories where old news is just re-worded to fill up a column.

The BK "trump" will be on going for all the carriers eventually. THey will just keep going in and out and in and out. Soon the fuel prices will effect ALL carriers if the fuel prices continue to soar through next year.

Many of the carriers have hedged for this year, but none have hedged for the entire year of next year. What will the price be then, and how long will pax be able to enjoy low fares?

Labor can not continue to subsidize the costs of fuel and low fares. If the Bush Adminstration doesn't step in soon with the "out of control" fuel prices (besides the raging war in IRAQ), the Republican Administration will end in January.

They only get three shots at it. UA, US, CO, and HP have each used one.

One can only hope.

Back on the subject of fuel cost and failure of the network carriers to sustain a fuel surcharge.....

Interestingly, one airline is raising fares to offset higher fuel costs without creating ripples.

Southwest fares rise with fuel
