Hey,

I am trying to find out some more info regarding the structure of US operations. Specifically a command center/tower in the HUB.

We have been hearing that those who work in the hub operations (tower) are union and that they are actually supervisors. Can any one tell if that is true?

They are ramp leads and members of the union. There is a tower manager who is not union.

So they are qualified to work both ramp and tower? Also, do you happen to know what the average payscale is?

It is a bid area position, it is the same pay as the ramp leads that is their classification, it is just a seperate bid area, like ramp, catering or tower.

Is that in all cities or just in the HUB?

What kind of responsibilities do they have?

Another operating difference between "Old U" and the "Old HP" are is in thier respective freight operations.

U has had it's Air Freight Operations outsourced for a number of years know...I would guess to say that it has been at least 9 years now.

HP on the other hand does its Air Freight at its major hubs "In-House"

HP also does not ship any Hazardous Materials on thier flights....and effective October 1 this will be true of the "New U " across the board.

U has had a very efficeient system in terms of dealing with Hazmat items...and this is going to create a real problem for maintenance when the issues and needs present themselves....and they do present themselves on a daily basis.

Somebody at HP has said that not training people for Hazmats...and not dealing with Hazmats equals to a savings in the millions....this is one I'd like to see at the end of a years time. I see flights being delayed and cancelled over these needs...and I see other parties pockets being lined to handle this for us.

Phantom,

How are they gonna ship batteries, 02, chemicals and other rotables needed for RON mtc?

Maybe company materials are exempt?

There goes money from fresh fish packed with dry ice.

Something is rotten in Denmark, if you ask me, sounds like mirror image all over again, instead of looking at what actually makes money.

Common Carriers..or couriers is what I'm hearing. HP's preference is a company called Lasership

I wish this was true...but it's NOT

Rotten doesn't even begin to cover it. We are tossing out the baby with the bath water.

Dont worry - if the new policy is exactly like the current HP policy - you can still ship with dry ice. It is just limited on how much you can ship. It must not be more than 4.4 lbs per person.

Cant answer the hazmat issue regarding MX items. But I do know that we frequently put parts on all of our planes.

Keep it Simple!

In the DCA "Tower" there is one CSS (Coordinator) and 2 FSA. The CSS basically runs the operation from connections to gate changes to all contact with OCC. Prior to 9-11 there were 2 CSS and 4 FSA. We are doing the same work load with 1/2 as many people now.
