US Airways set to pitch Delta its buyout bid

I know some gates and flights would go but other carriers will just add the capacity back. I don't get it.
Just based on what Parker/Kirby have said publicly, it seems they anticipate only selling off one of the shuttles and presumably (though they haven't said it) enough slots at DCA/LGA to operate it.

No mention has been made of divesting gates/slots other than that. For example, Kirby said that the number of flights at CLT would be reduced by cutting the number of banks, not flights in each bank. Thus, all the current gates would be needed - making it difficult for anyone else (lcc or not) to add much service there.

I expect the same would be the case at most/all the medium/large markets we serve. Without gates, the only additional service would be from other carriers already there - limited by their available gate space.

That's why I think Southwest and AirTran are chiming in. They want facilities (gates, etc) at airports they don't serve (but would like to) or more facilities at airports they already serve, so they're putting their markers on the table - "Give us the access and we won't oppose this deal", so to speak.

What I don't get is people saying that there is overcapacity. If this happened and we were to give up oh say 6 gates at DCA some other carrier is going to move in and add what we pretty much got rid of. Where is the reduction? A legacy moves out and a low cost moves in and adds service where there were previously two carriers operating? So where is the reduction? All the low cost carriers have complained about legacies for ages while all they have done over the past few years is add flying and expand like crazy? Why dont THEY downsize? I know some gates and flights would go but other carriers will just add the capacity back. I don't get it.
Well said. Anything that the combo would have to give up would be filled in by the LCC's.

Travelpro72,

Maybe(just maybe), you've answered your own question, and may not have realized it.

Maybe MORE low cost Domestic travel is WANTED, while "channeling' the remaining few legacy's to (almost entirely) International service.

ANYTHING from this F/U'd White House is POSSIBLE !!
SADLY, the "new" occupant does'nt move in, until(GOD FORBID) January 20, "2009"
