There has also been a 62 percent increase in the airline's reservations work force, or about 290 employees, at its center on Hanes Mall Boulevard in Winston-Salem in the past 18 months.

The help-wanted sign remains out, with training classes set for January and February.

That's quite a creative interpretation for what is actually occurring. In actuality the reservations operations is not expanding. The company shed their senior work force by systematically closing their senior offices of Indianpolis, San Diego, Syracuse, Orlando & Pittsburgh. The least senior of the offices remained opened. Outsourcing was used until the lower salaried America West Reservation operations came on board. Now the company is simply replacing the employees who can't return because their furlough rights have expired with low wage new hires

That's quite a creative interpretation for what is actually occurring.

In the real world where real people are affected, you're right. However, in the PR world of spinning thing so that they appear most favorable to a particular view or agenda, Parker et al can say it with a straight face.

Why? Because it's technically true. All those people left the company before the merger happened on Sept 27, 2005. So there were no furloughs after the US/HP merger (those MDA folks weren't real US employees - just ask the ALPA MEC :down.

Just remember this little technicality when Parker says that they "don't anticipate any furloughs" as a result of the DL/US merger. Is he only talking about no furloughs after the merger would be consumated upon DL's exit from BK?
