U.S. Airways officials: Plane lost wheel prior to take-off

i recall an F-100 had the wheel come off once in west va i think charleston or something like that

Yup, happened to me.
Wheel stayed in clt on takeoff roll.
We were notified sometime later via acars that we may be missing a wheel.
Did a low flyby somewhere ( have forgotten ) and verified .

That is hysterical. Thanks for posting it.

That was a clip from one of the best 2 hours of comedy, Tater Salad.

Wheel coming off completely? Lets see what actually did happen.
Hard to believe that the wheel just loosened up and rolled off the axle.

The suggestion was that it was the tire or the wheel. I dont' see a tire coming off of the wheel, rolling down the ramp, and getting wedged under another plane. My money is it being the wheel. Whether other things are attached to the wheel is another question.

Was in Clt .. 73 had a deflated/damaged tire, right side main, on taxi out near spot 6. Stuck on ramp, Mtc came out and changed wheel in place..blocked the ramp on the east side for awhile ...oohh the drama of some people!

Because you dont tow a plane with a flat tire or missing one, it can damage the landing gear.
