Two new MIA routes: CMH and PIT

Columbus, Ohio launches 5 July 2003. Two ERJs on Saturdays; one one on Sundays.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania launches 5 July 2003. One ERJ on Saturdays. On 27 December 2003 increases to two ERJs on Satudays, one on Sundays.

Pity the frequency, but nice to see two new destinations from MIA.

Tried to go to PIT several times in the past few months out of MIA. Every time it was oversold and an airbus. USAir only had 1 flight a day direct too.

Oh well, the computer geeks in Dallas must really know that it is unprofitable. Especially since no one else does it and capacity is so high on that route and in order to get there otherwise you have to connect via someones hub. Airtran has enhanced service there also.

With the service being weekend only, I''d venture a guess to say they are going after the cruise ship and inclusive package passengers to the Caribbean. How many cruise bags can you actually get on an ERJ?

airTran does not fly MIA-PIT. The closest they have is FLL-PHL. American Airlines simply realized that MIA-PIT is now a very underserved market. We went from 6 dailies (3 FLL 3 MIA) a few months ago to two dailies (one each) today (more during the winter months). Not really due to decreased demand, but because USAirways is taking away a lot of thier concentration from PIT (while MIA lost two US dailies to PIT, they gained a daily each to PHL and CLT). No doubt the planes will fill. Hopefully service will go daily soon. There is no reason they cannot profitablly fill and 37 to 45 seat ERJ between Miami and Pittsburgh or Port Columbus once a day. I say Miami-Indianapolis is up by November.

I know this is the 2nd try for AE on the MIA-CMH route, is it also the 2nd try to PIT too?

The problem was never loads, but payloads. The ERJs were quite simply going out too heavy, not only with passengers, but all thier luggage. No doubt in my mind the flights will fill up with absolute ease. I mean, come one, Delta Connection is running two daily Ft. Lauderdale-Columbus flights on pure O&D. It is only a question of when, not if, for both of these routes to go daily. And I''m happy that MIA-IND is on its way back too...any others we might see?

Eastern had 727''s from MIA to CMH and PIT when they were around. The market has always been there. Its a shame that its only weekends but we will take what we can get for now. I bet by DEC it will increase to daily and yes IND will be along soon too.

How about these MIA-SEA/MIA-SJC/MIA-SAN/MIA-PVD/MIA-ORF/MIA-FCO>

MIA-SEA: I think it will be coming back eventually. Alaska has had a runaway hit with thier MIA service.

MIA-SJC: Depends on what AA does in the future with thier San Jose, CA hub. I would not rule it''s return out, but it will take time.

MIA-SAN: Definitley could work with a 738. Maybe in the future.

MIA-PVD: Perfect M80/738 routes. It would be nice, but I don''t know if it will happen.

MIA-ORF: I think it has a very good chance of surfacing as an Eagle route in 2004.

MIA-FCO: Passengers are there, yield is not. Miami-Italy is a strong yielding market thanks to the fashion industry, but they are all going to Milan and Alitalia has that market covered with thier daily Milan service (which will see a 777-200 next year). Though there are rumours Alitalia may split the MIA (and BOS) route (MIA-MXP 5x/MIA-FCO 2x) like they have recently done to GRU/CCS/KIX/NRT.

If we see any European expansion, it will be MIA-FRA or MIA-BCN.

MIA should be seeing more and more service as the new terminal starts opening this fall.

The expansion of terminal D is the first phase of new terminal for AA. It is set up for more mainline a/c and for eagle at the very end. Once the rest of the terminal is completed it will extend from Terminal A to the end of Terminal D straight across, eliminating terminal B and C in the process. I believe AA''s time in Terminal E is coming to a halt soon. Word has it we will be completely out of the remote E terminal by the end of summer. AA now operates out of terminals A,B,C,D and E, quite a hike if you have to connect.

What exactly will the new Concourse D part opening 15 November house? It is my understanding that this will be home to American Eagle and will have some RJ gates/parking, is that correct? So I''m assuming if that is, we''ll be seeing a good amount of RJ expansion. If nto correct, where are they putting the new RJ gates? I know that is part of the expansion plans.

Here''s my ideal idea for MIA:
Skywest Airlines is now becoming a Continental Connection carrier in Houston, and there is a strong rumour that if thier relationship proves strong, Skywest will takeover Gulfstream International as a Continental Connection carrier, and base their operations at FLL serving intra-Florida and the Bahamas. Now this will leave Gulfstream in a big hole, but the solution is simple: have Gulfstream become an American Connection carrier and simplify thier operations out of MIA. They can fly to the smaller Bahamaians cities, like Treasure Cay and North Eleuthera, that they already service, and also take over Eagle service to Georgetown, Ft. Meyers, and Marsh Harbour. There is enough demand to put RJs on the Key West, Jacksonville, Freeport, and Nassau runs (well, actually, that would be lowering capacity by putting RJs on them). And then Gulfstream can further expand by adding cities to the network such as Naples, Melbourne, Marathon, and Gainsville (word is Gulfstream will be adding MIA-MTH and MIA-GNV this fall; both routes will be subsidized), and smaller Bahamian islands like Rock Sound and Governor''s Harbour.

Then American Eagle can build-up an RJ network to look something like this:
Columbus, Pittsburgh, Greensboro, Greer/Spartanburg, Richmond, Norfolk, Birmingham, Memphis, Louisville, Savannah, San Antonio, Indianapolis, Cinncinatti, Milwaukee, Islip, Ottawa, Quebec City (some are really long hauls in an RJ, I know, but look at RJ routes like DFW-OAK(DL), DFW-YYZ(AC), IAH-PSP(CO), and EWR-OKC(CO)).

American Airlines can add up a little service domesticlly with dailies to:
Seattle, San Jose, San Diego, Phoenix, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Austin

More service to Mexico and the Caribbean:
Grenada, St. Lucia, Tobago, Cozumel, Monterrey

More service to Latin America:
Liberia, Valencia, Asuncion non-stop, Belo Horizonte non-stop (3x a week), Iquitos (3x a week), Manaus, Georgetown

Europe:
Barcelona and Frankfurt I think would be most likely. However, IMO, no problem filling up flights to Manchester, Rome, or Munich.

So lets see how AA develops at MIA in the next 3-4 years. It will be interesting. We should just be happy that AA continues to expand at MIA despite time that are continually turbulent. It definitley appears like thier recently added routes have been smart moves. Both Santiago and Charlotte got second dailies in only six months.

You''d think CMH would support a MD80. CLE has had a daily 80 for some time. A 727 before that.

PIT could probably support a daily 80 as well.
