And again in typical UAL fashion, out comes another report that is somewhat contradictory to the first.

http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/070823/ual_maintenance.html?.v=1

One says they're looking to shed, the other that they're looking to expand.

Interesting times ahead

I think they will expand...right after they shed...the pesky AMFA represented AMT's.

The downward spiral continues. Look for all heavy maintenance work by all airlines to be outsourced by 2010. There will be one A&P signing of the work of 30 non-licensed mechanics.

I am so glad my "interesting" times have come and gone. There is life for us A&P's outside the airlines.

Indeed. I've been out several years myself now, still this continued erosion of aircraft maintenance is disquieting.

I did get an interesting take on these articles when I contacted some former co-workers at UAL. It seems AMFA is going into arbitration next month concerning UALs violation of the CBAs OSV limits.
Its to the tune of almost $200 million for 2005 alone. Add to that what will no doubt be produced in the 06'&07' audits and some of them believe this is just a diversionary tactic by UAL.

Create the threat, then offer to eliminate the threat if AMFA tosses the high dollar arbitration.

Its going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

Bottom line is if you are working for UA and under 50, then get the HeII out!
I hear there are positions open being a mortgage loan agent… :p

I wonder what Airline would be interested in the Maintenance unit ? (AA?) and I know foreign airlines are limited in their ownership of an airline but could a foreign airline own a maintenance unit? Say LH?

I would look at Air Canada long before AA. AA is in over there head with the MRO. It will flop and the company will blame the employees and AA maintenance will end up like everyone else.

Most of us understand this at AA (at least everyone outside Tulsa) and have started side businesses or are in school getting degrees for the end of the road of A/C maintenance.

LH doesn't actually do aircraft maint. They spun off their unit this way years ago. Lufthansa Technik is a stand alone company. UA is looking at doing the same thing. Could Technik be a buyer? Yes, the foreign ownership shouldn't be an issue. Technik already owns some assets in the US. They have a bizjet and engine overhaul operation in Tulsa and a bizjet center in LA. They are lacking a commercial airline center in North America. A few years ago some Technik badged men were seen at DL TechOps with clipboards. That is quite normal. We get audited by everyone that sends work into our facility. the strange thing is they were measuring the place. Nothing ever came to light from this visit.

So who else would want the SFO Base facility. The most likely canidate is not another airline; or even another MRO, say AAR or Timco. Reports are the front runners are some of the big capital outfits like Bain. They would give UA cash for the operation and then goe through the operation seeing where they cna cut costs. They also would most likely line up funding to invest in the aging facility(in the proccess adding a debt load to the operation). In the end they would arrange for a public stock offering. All along they will be paying themself for all that they are doing to turn around the operation.

I say let them sell it. Who gives a damn anyway...I'm ready whatever they do. Hey UAL TECH are you still with the company?

Loyalty is for dogs. Whether you're a United dog or a Michael Vick dog the result is substantially the same.

I "might" have to eat my words(over time), because of this "prognostication", but I'm betting that AA will NEVER outsource A/C maint.

As long as the "lap dog" TWU is on the property, it will be business as usual !!
