La said that Texas got it's first winter weather warning in it's history. They've had equally bad weather prior to that, and I'm pretty sure that they had winter storm warnings. When you are being urged to stay home and go out only if it's absolutely necessary (which they did a lot over the years) then odds are good it was a "warning" from the Weather Service that was the reason.

Ah....it's becoming clearer now. for the entire state. I think the entire state of Kansas is under a winter storm warning, as well as Oklahoma, Colorado, Nebraska and Missouri. Not sure what they get in Oklahoma, but it's not too out of the ordinary to get wind chill warnings because of extreme temperatures. It happens. Hell, on one spring break in Ft Meyers Florida, temps on the beach were below freezing the day we left

Turbines produce about 25% or Texas' power needs in the summer. It's considerably less in the winter. And while that sounds bad...would the loss of 25% of something be catastrophic? I only mention that because a 747 has 4 engines, and if they lose one in flight, they just lost 25% of their power needs...but they still continue to fly on. Texas couldnt' fly on.
