Does anyone have any info on how this will effect our standing in the Star Alliance? Aren't there certain minimum service standards that apply? Does charging for everything make us the black sheep of the family?

Crazy

Air Canada started last fall with the ala carte pricing. They haven't been kicked out.

My understanding is that Air Canada's ala carte applies to some heavily discounted fares and they actually have programs that provide value...like on your way or something like that.

United talked about employee cuts long before US. United is charging for baggage. I don't know what the standards for SA are, but unless US totally folds, It's still in. This crisis is hitting all airlines worldwide.

Air Canada also charges you if you want a pillow and blanket. I think it's $5 USD or CAD.

On SAS flights from Scandanavia to Europe, you are also charged for soft drinks. Take a look at their 'menu'. 2 EUR for a cup of coffee and 3 EUR for a soda.

BMI charges 3 EUR for coffee and 1 EUR for soda. http://www.flybmi.com/downloads/bmi/mainline_menu.pdf

While it's new for US airlines, it's not uncommon with other airlines around the world, even Star carriers.

I could be wrong, but I don't think BMI charges its gold, silver, and blue plus diamond members. Also, I think SAS offers some version of economy plus which are higher fares. US provides no value. US continues to screw its remaining VFF. US Sucks.

Every time US Airways downgrades their service, the same question gets asked about how this will affect our Star Alliance membership.

Nothing ever seems to make any difference. I think the only thing that might get US Airways tossed from the Star Alliance is Chapter 7, so let's not worry about the Star Alliance. Nothing Tempe does seems to matter to them.

I guess it would depend. But if they are complaining about US changing it's DM program. That won't work. Now if people are mis connecting and US is unreliable in getting people from point A to point B that might do something. But for the most part US can do what it wants with it's program.

OK, so what happens if the Star Alliance was to get oh say a few hundred complaints regarding US Airways from oh say a group of business travelers.
Nothing at all. The group of people who fly on the company dime, pocket the miles and generally complain about everything are a fairly small (but extremely vocal) group. The business travelers that matter complain with their wallet, not with their voice. When the other star members lose connecting traffic from US or their passengers stop connecting vis US, then and only then will you see changes.
