The low-cost airline would charge passengers less on "bar stools" with seat belts around their waists.

Michael O'Leary, the chief executive, has already held talks with US plane manufacturer Boeing about designing an aircraft with standing room.

Mr O'Leary is reported to have got the idea from the Chinese airline Spring, which has put forward similar plans. It estimates space could be made for up to 50 per cent more passengers and costs could be cut by 20 per cent.

Mr O'Leary also considered introducing a "fat tax" for overweight passengers

Ryanair is planning to run flights where passengers stand during the journey at a cost of just £5 per ticket.

A Ryanair spokesman said that Boeing had been consulted over refitting the fleet with "vertical seats" which would allow passengers to be strapped in while standing up, which would cost between £4 and £8 per person.

Safety testing will be carried out next year.

Seatblets don't matter:
In a recent interview with the London Daily Telegraph, O'Leary spoke about his desire to create a "standing room only" cabin aboard Ryanair's planes.
"If there ever was a crash on an aircraft, God forbid, a seatbelt won't save you. Seatbelts don't matter." said O'Leary. "You don't need a seatbelt on the London Underground. You don't need a seatbelt on trains which are traveling at 120 mph, and if they crash you're all dead…"

More pax means more weight. No baggage to offset the extra weight. Less fuel means shorter flights. Makes no sense. Stupid idea.
