Republic buying Midwest Airlines

A few years ago when Airtran offered to purchase Midwest for $290 million in stock and cash, I remember thinking that was a pretty good move for Airtran and one of the few ways that Midwest could be succesfully integrated into a larger company. However, to my surprise they fought it.

Now, this announcement today got me thinking again , why did Midwest reject Airtran's offer?
