My understanding (and past experience) is that ZED fares are based on mileage from origin to destination and connections make no difference in the fare. The NWA rep I spoke to said she 'thought' that a separate ZED ticket was needed for each leg, but wasn't sure. Being that these tickets are for my parents, I really don't want them getting stuck somewhere because the agent won't let them on. So then, my question: Will a ZED ticket showing MSP-PHL be accepted for a re-route thru DTW??

Thanks!!

ZEDs are needed for each individual connecting leg. You must buy them tickets for each leg.

ZED fares are based on mileage and calculated on a per segment basis. Flight connections are permitted but each flight segment will be charged separately. <<-- That sucks, I know..but it beats buying a full fare ticket.

Yes, a ticket is required for each leg. I think ZED stands for Zonal Employee Discount. In most cases, if you purchase a ZED for a MSP-PHL, but then discover that you need to connect through another city like DTW, your parents can purchase a ZED to DTW and in most cases use the MSP-PHL ZED in DTW to get to PHL. This should work as long as your departure cities fall in the same zone. Double check this with a supervisor. BTW, if you purchase extra ZEDs for protection in advance, they should be refundable if you do not use them. Again, double check with employee travel office or a supervisor.
