Question About Possible Furloughs

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette said yesterday part of the company's proposal to the pilots was furloughing between 250 and 775 pilots. Doesn't that equal around 1000-2000 flight attendants?

Will MidAtlantic be able to absorb this many employees over time? (Or would most of them even be interested in a postion there?)

in chapt. 11, MDA doesn't hire anyone additional. No additional airplanes, no need for additional staffing.......

It really is do or die, either the employees choke down a bitter pill, or games up.

Sucks to be us doesen't it!

SoldwholeSale,

Thanks for the clarification.

I thought that proposal was meant to keep us out of bankruptcy, though. (I thought that those furloughs were being offered as a proposal.) I guess I misread, or just don't understand all of this negotiation talk.

Air Conditioned,

As I understand it, the 775 pilot furloughs are the possible number with the productivity changes in the proposal to ALPA. Without going back to the ALPA site and looking it up, seems like there was something about the possibility of reducing that number thru "discussions". Of course, that could be like saying they'd "discuss" giving everyone $1,000,000, too - what's the chances of a positive outcome.

Ok, not having anything particularly productive to do (ok, ok, that I wanted to do) I looked the furlough part up.

Up to 775 pilots, but possibly as low as 250 with "planned utilization increases". Possibility of being recalled as early as 2006. Since furloughing people costs money, they're willing to "discuss" ways to eliminate them as long as ALPA is willing to give something else up in return.

Frankly, have'n been furloughed before, I would not give in to any furloughs under any circumstances, period. The USAirways pilots are the golden goose which means that they are in control. If the company doesnt like it, tough beans. Time to make CCY squeem.

The USAirways pilots history has always been to cave in and screw the junior guy. Formerly senior guys, now very junior are on the sacrificial alter. However, its time to put an end to this insanity by ALPA. The "Ive got mine, screw you" mentality has to end. Only 5 guys on that MEC have any balls, the rest are a bunch of embarassing powderpuffs.

Whats my interest, I'm a former USAir pilot with lots of close friends there, and watch doings very closely. And they deserve better than the capitulating 7.

...wonder if there are any other mentalities at this co. that need to end?

Jim,
Thanks for taking the time to look that up and explain it to me. I certainly hope for the best, as we all do. I hate to see anyone else get furloughed...it really sucks.
