Question About Ogg Cancellations

After that nutcase drove his SUV into the OGG terminal and set fire to it (the SUV), airlines cancelled departures (but not arrivals) for the next couple of days, according to what I read. I checked on AA OGG-ORD flights and they were cancelled for a couple of days, but not the flights to OGG. Question: Did AA (and the other airlines who were, I'd assume, in the same situation) simply fly those aircraft back to the mainland empty? That must get expensive.

MAUI TERMINAL CLOSED AT APPROX 0745 LCL. RPTDLY MAN DROVE SUV INTO TRML TO UA CNTR AND SET CAR ON FIRE. ALL DPTRS CNLD. ENRT FLTS WERE ALLOWED TO LND AND DEPLANE PSGRS. RPTDLY INCIDENT DUE TO DOMESTIC QUARREL. APT REOPENED AT 1845L. AA SKD TO OPERATE 2 B767 EXSNS TO ORD AND DFW 3/1 TO ACCOM REV.
